Great Food - Excellent Service

We just got back from the Reel Club for lunch - we enjoyed the crabcake sandwich and salmon. The food was served hot and fresh. The waitress offered suggestions and seemed genuine. We were very impressed - the price was very reasonable for such good quality food. The manager introduced himself, as did the waitress, Marylou and truly personalized their service.

Went here on NYE. Great selection of hot & cold apps (including sushi) that could be a whole meal if one would like. The milanese grouper and the whitefish with the espresso bbq sauce was fantastic.

Absolutely worth checking out

I have been there for lunch and/or dinner 5-6 times and have always had an enjoyable experience at the Reel Club. Excellent bar, and an elegant and quiet dining room --just the way I like it. Food is well prepared (both seafood and steaks that I have enjoyed there) and its presentation is impressive. Waiting staff has always been very cordial and helpful.

Great Place

I love...love... LOVE this place! The decor is warm and relaxing the music is nice. The service is great, everyone is friendly and accommodating. Now the Food, is SPECTACULAR. The Popovers- bread served as you wait, are excellent .You must try the mini steak sandwiches, they are seasoned perfectly not too much and not to little and the steak is very tender. The Calamari is fried just right with a wonderful marinara sauce that has a little hint of spice, but a subtle sweetness to make you smile. You have got to try the truffle Mac and Cheese, you will never view Mac & Cheese the same, this is a wonderful side dish that compliments the Sea Bass and Salmon perfectly. And you must not forget dessert, I had the Lemon Moraine Pie, which is an inspired recipe from the Chef's Grandmother, the dessert is wonderful. I will definately be back again and again!

Great Food and Service

I was a little worried about the Reel Club because of all the negative reviews. I was pleasantly surprised, For our entrees I had Broiled Lobster and my wife had the Crab Legs both were absolutely fantastic.I had read they had a problem with their staff, that must have been corrected or not true because our waitress, bus boys, and hostess were very friendly and helpful.Save room for dessert the Taffy Apple Sorbet is out of this world also get the Crunchy Munchy Shrimp for your appetizer it's fabulous.Their prices are comparable with other restaurants in the area.We had two of the most expensive items on the menu,an appetizer, one side dish, two glasses of wine and dessert and our bill was under $115

Reel Mixed Experiences
By ANG from Darien, June 23, 2008

The first time I went to Reel Club, the food and service were very good. so much so that I started recommending it to friends. However, I went last night and had a very strange expreience.

I ordered the Tuna steak, which I expected would be prepared rare. the waitress confirmed this by informing me that the chef prefers to prepare this dish rare and asking if that was ok with me. I informed her that was perfect. later, the tuna was brought out and it was a nice cube of tuna about 3.5 inches per side, exactly what I expected.

When i cut into it, it was clearly cooked all the way through, somewhere between medium-well and well done. I immediately pointed this out and asked if this was a rare tuna steak. she iformed that it was rare, but they prefer to cook it all the way through or else it is cold in the middle.

?????? what? I could understand this at a steak place that does seafood on the side. but I was dumbfounded at a seafood place to hear this. I dont usually send food back, but the tuna was so dry I could not have eaten it. the next tuna steak was rare and quite good with the citrus glaze.

Aside from that, the new sugar snap peas side dish is very good and the mounds bar dessert is worth the trip on its own.

NO parking, unless you valet. Seated promptly at reservation time. Decor is soothing, very contemporary. Service is friendly, but slow. Food, including sides, drinks, desserts, are all average in quality and are over priced. Save your money, eat three times someplace else.

Reel Bad -- Like Eating in a Locker Room
By Vince Hill from Western Suburbs, April 27, 2008

We were hoping for a a good replacement for Papagus -- a restaurant with great fish and very knowledgeable staff. This is not it; something we could tell from the moment we stepped into the crammed foyer. Despite reservations, you will wait a long time for your table, even though it seems a table has been crammed into every square inch of the restaurant. Lots of claustrophobic rooms and no space on your table for plates. It felt like we were on top of the couple next to us. Although well-meaning, our waiter didn't have a clue. We had to bug him to bring the wine several minutes after we had our entree. When and where was the last time that happened? There's nothing very special about the seafood preparations and the recommended dish, Ahi Tuna, was overcooked (hardly any pink anywhere). Lobster was a little better, but there's no way we'd consider going back in there. Even with a life preserver.

Disappointing
By Tom from Woodridge, April 14, 2008

After reading good reviews on several websites, we tried the Reel Club last night.

I'd read that the menu was large, but found it really wasn't very broad: lobster, crab, steaks, and just a few varieties of fish - cod, grouper, tilapia, sea bass and ahi tuna. Some of these are listed more than once on the menu, with the identical dish with or without one ingredient (tilapia with or without pepper flakes). There was only one off the menu entree (lamb).

Service was slow, the wait staff could be more professional, and prices are high.

We were told that all entrees (priced from $19-55) came without side dishes, so we ordered sides ($4-7)... only to find my wife's crab cakes were served with new potatoes and cole slaw, making the hash browns and spinach she'd ordered a waste of money.

I think Melman has made a mistake with this one - especially since there's a great seafood restaurant (Braxton's) just a few hundred feet away. Serving a narrower menu with poorer service and higher prices probably isn't a recipe for success.

On the plus side, the spinach was excellent.
