Great food and very resonably priced

After reading the previous reviews I was not expecting much but I was wrong. We started with the vegetable pizza and it was amazing. I had the steak sandwich and my friend had the jerk tofu sandwich. Both were delicious and the portions were huge. Our server was very helpful and attentive. I will definitely be going back.

try once but do not ruin any special occasion there

Let me be modest and not use word aweful here. May be, what we ordered wasn't as good as other entree might be. But I am sure that eventhough their being vegan may sound helthy/ conscious, still food they serve is surely not easy on fat. about the staff there, my review goes negative. Ambience noisy, although interior was OK.

Will Never Go Back

I am not a vegetarian but went to Karyn's with a big group for a friend's party. To my surprise, the food was actually ok. What was not ok was the service! 15 minutes just to get a menu, 10 more to order a drink, 15 more to get the drink... and this is all before even getting a chance to order food! After eating a mediocre dinner, it took another 45 minutes just to get the check (with 18% gratuity added). After complaining to the manager, he dismissed me and said "its a busy night." Not only was the restaurant half empty, but that is no excuse for terrible service and poor ambiance. I wasted 3 hours of a Saturday night for expensive hummus and cold pizza.

Does Not Come Close to Soul Vegetarian East
By sfdcubfan from streeterville, August 2, 2008

I was beyond disappointed. I'm used to unusual textures when it comes to soy "meat" products, but it's like these guys don't even try. I went with two friends for my birthday; the only thing that was good was the guacamole. We didn't have any other appetizers thinking that the entrees had to be good if they were to draw such a huge crowd all the time, but it was really bad. My "ribs" were basically the texture of the soy dogs that I buy in the supermarket, but squared off and bathed in bbq sauce. My friend had the "meatloaf," which was horrific, and my other friend had a taco bowl, within which the "beef" portion had the texture of soaked bread. You figure out the rest. As a new vegan, it's hard enough to find food at regular restaurants, but this one doesn't even try. Soul Vegetarian East, on the south side, is miles ahead of this place.

Absolutely Awful!
By fitnessrn from chicago, July 23, 2008

This is by far the worst food I've ever tasted in my life! If you are going to name something meatloaf, please don't make it unbelievable spicy! I can understand the spice, it is probably trying to hide the nasty taste! The texture of the taco salad meat, is like a sponge, just a bad feeling in the mouth! The rib tasted like rubber! Will never return!

Surprising! In a GOOD way!

Unlike some of the other negative reviews, my wife and I had a very good time at Karyn's Cooked. She's a brand new vegan (only a week, and counting) while I'll eat just about anything. I took her to Karyn's to help us both learn what vegan options existed. Our waiter (Shawn) was superb, and guided us through the meal. He gave a lot of good insight and advice and had a ton of personality.

The restaurant's organization left a bit to be desired, however. We started with one waitress, then switched to Shawn just after giving our drink orders. When the appetizer came out, we didn't have any plates or silverware. We still didn't have silverware when dinner was served. And it took another 15 minutes after dessert to get the check.

But the minor organizational issues can be overlooked because the food was eye-opening and very good. She had the flautas and was blown away by the "sour cream". I had the chili, and side sampler (greens, mac&cheese, potato wedges). The chili was excellent - as good as any meaty chili I'd had. You wouldn't know anything (meat) was missing. Mac&Cheese ... well ... some vegan foods just can't compare to the real deal. Dessert was lemon merainge pie which was even better than the typical pie.

The restaurant has areas it could clearly improve. But the food - the main reason I went to Karyn's Cooked - was very good. Thanks Karyn and the restaurant's staff ... my wife's decision to pursue a vegan lifestyle might not be as bad as I first thought!

Annoyed and full=heartburn

The food is great, karyn's cooked is excellent for vegetarians that want a fine dining option, but the food is not worth enduring the terrible service. We sat waiting for fifteen minutes before being approached by a server. He didn't listen and messed up my order, put in a new order and ignored us. In order to communicate with our server we had to go through a third party-our busboy. I had to bring my check up to the host, who said-"uhh wait a minute I need change" and disappeared down the stairs. He seemed unphased that I was bringing my check up to him. And then when I proceeded to tell our server how much he sucked, he told me I should have told him that earlier. Right after you made me a lukewarm pina colada that was half full? Go to VeggieBite on Milwaukee for comparable food at a fraction of the price, and friendly counter service that won't give you a bellyache.

we dined at Karyn's on a friday night and the food was decent but they desperately tried to kick us out. When we finished eating, we still had 1/2 bottle of wine & they asked us to hurry up. WHAT?! Unbelievable. Decent veggie food, good idea and nice thought, but if you want just lunch crowd, then advertse it PLEASE! Peace,

The food is good, could...

The food is good, could use a little imagination and become a bit more creative, but dishes are substantial. Service is a bit off. On 2 occasions, my wine never showed up, after I pointed it out on the menu. The ambience needs sprucing, detailing: wiping down walls, seats, dusting, etc.

We just tried Karyn's tonight and it was delicious. I would agree that the waitstaff is not impressive, but the food is unbeatable. As far as prices, anyone who has bought organic knows that it is not cheap or a "value" that you are buying or looking for. I will definitely go back and wish there were more health conscious places in the city.
