Dinkel's Bakery

A Chicago institution, Dinkel's Bakery was founded in 1922 by Joseph K. Dinkel, a German immigrant, and is now lovingly attended by the third generation of the family. Its original location was across the street from the current one. In addition to cookies, cakes and pies, the bakery sells salads and sandwiches made with meats roasted on the premises. Party trays and special-order cakes for all occasions are available. The mail-order catalog features stollens, strudels, fruit cakes, whiskey cakes, cinnamon rolls and a 1922 crunch cake, most of which are made with the original recipes. There are several tables here and a few bar stools but this is mostly a working bakery. Outside Illinois, call 1-800-822-8817.
