I really did like Coco's. My husband and I went on a Friday and we had appetizers and drinks and it was delicious, I wasn't crazy about the fried yuca but being Puerto Rican I know its not my favorite and the taste takes some getting use to. But all in all I did enjoy my experience and would go back...food is somewhat pricy but we don't go out to often so it was pretty fair compair to other restaurants.

We went to this wonderful restaurant expecting something classic but more than classic this place is a very cultural one on the walls there was a great sculpture created but i do not know who ? ( We forgot to ask about it ),where is shows the great richnest of the puertorican people, the place looks very elegant,We ordered the seafood platter to start and it was delicious great coconut shrimp, crab cakes mmmm yummmm.....The main entrees were exquisite i ordered the shrimp mofongo and it was made to perfection,My companion got the rack of lamb in a tropical papaya sauce and it was fenomenal too, the martinis were great they have a great selecction of natural ones ,I tried the passion fruit and the mango one and mmmmm.... it was delicious We have never tried anything like it,we ended up with a glass of delicious red wine malbec for the lamb and a white chardonay for my mofongo it was a great pair and the music was lovely salsa, bachata ,etc...all thoses caribbean rythms kept us moving all night. We recomend this place to anyone that is looking for a very authentic puertorican experience.

Authentic Puerto Rican Food......NOT EVEN CLOSE!

A girlfriend an I decided to do a night of dining and salsa dancing so I chose Coco Restaurant specifically for the live music. We get there and was immediately seated which was a good thing. The restaurant was not busy and come to find out that the live salsa band they claim they have every Saturday night was not playing, so it was latin DJ music, which was ok, but was worried that the place was not going to get busy. Our first order was the Appetizer sampler #1 which consisted of overly fried empanada which lacked the meat and taste, a round ball that looked liked it could be a potatoe, but it was fried yuca shaped like a ball which tasted terrible, then what appeared to be some type of fried shrimp claiming to be coconut shrimp, lacking the coconut. In any case we struggled through our appetizers and decided to order some red wine, which was very good, yippy one good point so far. We decided to order their specialty--- Shrimp Mofongo and puerto rican steak churasco. The entrees came out and visually they looked appetizing, but once we started eating, it was a totally different story. With each bite came this look of disapointment from both of us because we shared each entree. The mofongo was engorged in scalllions, which made it too oniony and with a texture that was not pleasant. The skirt steak tasted like they just slapped it on a frying pan added no additional seasoning and slapped some kind of tomatoe based sauce on top to try and add flavor, but all it did was make it worse, it was gross. We had had enough, asked for our bill and ditched the place by 10:30. On a positive note, the owner of the restaurant did make his rounds and introduced himself to us, which was a pleasant surprise, it's too bad he didn't ask us what we thought of the food! I was really dissapointed with the quality of the food considering that this restaurant is in the heart of Humboldt Park where you can get Puerto Rican food even at the park. I'm sure the drinks are good and maybe the music but the food is really bad...........

A WONDERFUL PLACE TO GO!!!

My husband and i went there to with another couple and we loved it!! What i loved the most was the wonderful live music. The music is loud but who listens to music at a whisper level??? The entire feel of the restaurant is high class with a beautiful mural in the center representing all of the blood lines that Puerto Ricans have. Since i am Puerto Rican I LOVED THAT!!!! I seen numerous people from distinct nationalities enjoying there food and just having a good time. The service was very good. Our waitress was busy serving more than one table but she was still very attentive! I would definitely reccomend this place to everyone of any nationality!

Worst restaurant ever!
By SR from south loop, February 3, 2008

WORST restaurant I've eaten at in Chicago...out of all my years living here!!!!!! The food was NOT "upscale" as they say on their website. Bathrooms were comparable to your neighborhood gas station...yuck. I went with 7 friends. The live music was turned up so high, i'm surprised the windows didn't crack. When we asked our waitress to turn down the music, she just looked at us in a condescending way and shook her head NO. Try to imagine a small place with poor acoustics, blasting live music to the point where you can't make out what is being said....all you hear is a vibrating buzz with ringing in your ear and you can actually hear your eardrums pulsating in agony. Then, to make the experience even more awful, the speakers start making that blood-curdling ear-piercing scream that microphones occasionally make when you're trying to adjust them. Yeah, this continued and the waitress STILL would not even request to the manager to turn the music down. It was AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL!!!!!! If you must, go for live music and drinks, But bring EARPLUGS so you can at least hear it in a more enjoyable way. Here's the last kicker...we arrived at 9pm, we got our appetizers at 10:20pm, we got our meals at 11:15 pm, which we had to pass around to each other because the waitress had no idea who ordered what, and we couldn't hear her when she announced each plate! Kitchen was VERY slow.

Finally a Puerto Rican Restaurant with cachet!

My first visit to Coco's was great! I was in a large group and it was the first time for all of us. We were explained in great detail about the entrees even given a bit of history. I've been told that this place was pricey for Puerto Rican food which is why I hesitated to go but after my visit I thought it was worth it. This wasn't just a Puerto Rico Restaurant it was Puerto Rican Cuisine. Everything was delicious! I'm Puerto Rican and if I can pay big dollars for Italian food or Greek food I can definitely pay for great Puerto Rican food! And the coconut martini OMG! I'm going back for more!

Nice spot for drinks and appetizers... plentiful outdoor seating. Attentive staff. A little pricey but it is a nice option for the neighborhood.
