South Loop Thumbs Up
By Abaskingo from South Loop, September 4, 2009

After living in Texas for 20+ years one tends to know a bit about Mexican food. It is upon those credentials that I can recommend Zapatista's as credible, Chicago Mexican food. A personal favorite are the burritos (good value) with Cuatro Chiles sauce, but the weekend brunch is also standout. Note: Try their Bloody Mary served with a Coronita (small Corona beer.) Excellent combo.

never again

I was recently at Zapatista's for a friends birthday party. First, it was hotter than hades, which the employees were unable to fix. The food was TERRIBLE. The $30 dinner I had ordered was nothing more than a $5 steak with ice cold chipotle potatoes, which by the way, did not have any chipotle flavor whatsoever! Upon returning the potatoes, they were replaced by a microwaved scoop. Out of the 20-something guests for this party, most of us either returned or were very unhappy with the entrees.
As if the awful food wasn't bad enough, the waitress was ridiculous. There is no reason for any server to have to bump into, lean on or hit a customer during EVERY visit she made to the table. I'm sorry but if you're not tall enough to reach across the table, get someone who is! I will never return to this restaraunt, and will continue to spread the word about my very unenjoyable/abusive visit.

Don't Go

I went to the bar yesterday (Thursday) and tried asking the bartender some questions about the bar and a particular even that was being held at Zapatista that evening. He was very rood and unfriendly. He gave me a very unfriendly look, letting me know that he didn't want to talk. He answered my question and walked away.

I had drinks and a appetizer at a table. 4 bus people asked me through out my meal if they could take my plate away. My plate was full and I was in mid conversation with a friend. Don't go to the bar at Zapatista and don't eat. You are better off going elsewhere.

Nothing Special
By axa34 from S. Loop, December 7, 2008

I have been to this place twice now and I wish that it was actually any good. I'll start by saying the ambience is actually very nice along with the patio. The food however is a different story as it is very bland. The guacamole is average at best. The only good thing I can say about the guac is that at least it was inexpensive. Don't go here to try and impress anyone, just come if its close by and you are not expecting much, bc that is exactly what you are going to get.

Awful!

First of all, i work in the hospitality industry. I had an 8:30 dinner reservation for two and when i approached the hostess regarding my reservation she looked at me like she had no clue what i was talking about. It made me think I made the reservation with a bus boy or something. She didn't have a table ready and said if we could wait by the bar for a bit. We had a drink at the bar and 25 minutes later after wandering around aimlessly the hostess walked us to a table. Our waiter took a while then finally took our order. The food portions themselves were small, more (Mexican cuisine like.) My date ordered plain chicken tacos with cheese and lettuce and they came smothered in some sauce. We asked about the order then he brought a plate with cheese and lettuce. "There you go". He then went back to joking around with his co- workers. The place was crowded which is always good for business but everyone passing by kept running into our chairs because it's just a crammed floor space with tables. We paid our bill and no one even said thank you for coming. The decor and ambiance is great and that's about it. Wouldn't go back there or refer anyone there ever again.

Nice spot
By Onstage06 from South Loop, October 12, 2008

Overall rating:

I have been reading quite a few negative reviews regarding this spot lately - mainly in regards to service. I hit this spot up every few weeks (in the neighborhood) and have yet to have bad service. The food is consistently high quality. (Mexican Cheesecake is a must). My only complaint is that they are a little pricey on some of the dishes. Not really above upper-mid scale in the city... but still. Definitely recommend. It is a nice relaxing spot.

Disappointed
By Foodie 60605 from South Loop, August 23, 2008

I was also disappointed with the restaurant. The food was decent and the ambiance was typical for a mexican cantina. I just felt like they were rushing me to get me out the door. We still had food on our plates and were sitting back for conversation and they kept wanting to take our dishes. I mean, what's up with that? The dishes are also a bit more pricey for the quality and service.

I live right down the street from Zapatista and have been there several times now. The service is always good, drinks are strong and come fast and they have the best guacamole in the world! You have got to try it. Each time I have tried something different and have never been disappointed.
