Uncle Julio's Hacienda: User Reviews

Uncle Julio's is always busy so we usually go on a weeknight. They have the Swirl which is a winner! It is frozen margarita with a swirl of sangria through it. Usually I get a beer when im out but I will grab a Swirl if I'm at Uncle Julio's. The dining room is usually pretty loud so we enjoy the calmer weeknight crowd. I always think the fresh tortillas spinning around the machine and popping out are a nice touch. I've had a bit of the menu - from the ribs to the ribeye steak I can say I've enjoyed it all and always leave full.

I was here for lunch yesterday, and the food was really just awful. Cheese and onion enchilada was mushy and bland, rice was dry and flavorless, and the shredded chicken in my crispy taco was so salty that it was all I tasted for two hours afterward. The side of beans was the most bizarre part of the meal- instead of the usual refried beans or black beans you'd find at any decent Mexican restaurant, we all got little cups of baked beans with a tiny chunk of unripe tomato in the middle. Completely unappetizing. I have no idea why this place is always so packed.

I've been here a good number of times over the years and have been satisfied. First off they don't take reservations because it's always busy. The food is very close to being authentic and overall it's pretty good. The swirls are good as well. I like the bar setup it has tv's and they usually have the games on. Which is cool because they have tables if you don't want to dine in the dining room area. The only flaw is that they nickel and dime every extra. The staff is pretty knowledgable and they're courteous. Although one time I waited for about 20 minutes for some sour cream. But he was very sincere and apologetic that he had forgotten. The ceviche is tasty and overall an active ambience. I have returned numerous times and will continue.

I've been searching for a better tex-mex place in Chicago for almost five years and haven't even come close to finding one. Great place to bring a large group or out-of-towners (even though it's technically a chain). Also seems like a popular destination for "girls night out," fyi. Remember to do call ahead seating otherwise plan for a long wait over some margaritas and chips/salsa, but worth it. The bacon-wrapped shrimp are excellent, although I usually pull out the little jalapeno peppers.

I went here last night on a first date and overall it was a good experience with only a few cons. A few things that stick out in my mind that you might want to take note of before you try it out for yourself.
1. It was PACKED. I'm not kidding. The place is friggin' huge and it was a madhouse in there. Not only were there a ton of people in the actual dining areas but the bar area was packed too. We ended up having to sit at the bar for like 50 minutes while we waited for our table and kept getting bumped and smushed, it made for kind of awkward first date before dinner convo so beware.
2. The decor is great. You really feel like you are on a ranch in Mexico somewhere. I really really liked the overall ambiance of the place.
3. One of the best Margs I have ever had. I would think this would be a pretty fun place to come for happy hour if you could get a table in the bar area.
4. Great food, a little on the expensive side when there are so many great Mexican places that you can eat at on the cheap, but the food was excellent.
5. Good service. The girl who served us seemed to be so excited about her job and the food that she almost ate some of the food off my plate, but she was nice and she did a good job. The bartenders were good too. Despite the crazed atmosphere everyone seemed to be getting a drink rather promptly.
Overall, great, fun, lively experience. I would definitely go back.

Best chicken fajitas I've ever had. The chicken was so juicy and tender. The guacamole that came with it was fresh and very good. There was so much food that I had enough for another meal the next day. They allow you to call ahead to put your name down which was great - we were seated as soon as we got there even though they were busy. The atmosphere wasn't great because it's kinda crowded and loud, but you don't go there for the atmosphere, you go there for the awesome food. The only downside is that they make you pay $6 for valet if you want to park in their lot.
