Stopped in for my first visit last Fri around 5pm. Place was pretty busy considering all the other restaurants in the area were empty. But I don't know why, as the food overall was nothing special and pretty bland in the spice department. I had the roasted beef enchiladas--the beef had the consistency of pot roast, drowned in a mediocre mole sauce. The rice was good, but I can make better black beans. And the whole dish was warm, not hot. My buddy had the steak tacos, which he said was nothing special. If I go back, it will probably be just for some drinks and maybe some apps. Overpriced for what you get.

Snowy Saturday night, good friends coming home from California for the holidays and the promise of some good spicy Mexican food enticed us to make a reservation at "That Little Mexican Cafe." Unfortunately upon our arrival, in spite of our reservation, we were asked to step and aside and wait for our table. What we all thought would be just a couple of minutes turned into a half hour wait. We even began to call other restaurants to inquire if they had wait.
All was made right though, after we were seated and the hostess send over two orders of fresh made guacamole. All at the table agreed that it was the best guacamole that we had ever had.
There were five in our party and we all had different entrees. All were tasty but mine (Shrimp enchiladas) was cold. Other said that their meals were piping hot.
While the hostess was very friendly and generous I still believe that our reservation time should have been honored by making sure that a table would be available. (By planning properly) Our waiter was excellent. He was very helpful in helping us pick the right Tequila for our margaritas. Also in telling us about the hand made corn tortillas, (helping us decide on corn over flour) made especially for the holiday season.
We are all likely to return.

My husband and I visited during the week and had a fantastic meal. I had the ahi tuna fajitas and he had fish tacos -we loved both! We also got the guacamole they make at your table and it was fantastic. Overall great experience and we continue to go back for more!

Just went there for dinner, on a tuesday night. Service was kind've slow due to the amount of people there, which was odd for a Tuesday night. The waiter was very good, eventhough it was slow, he always came by to update us on our food, and further attending we needed. Menu was very limited, in my opinion, appeared to be no Queso sauce for Chips just salsa and guac which cost $3.25 extra if you want more. The guac was good, but probably could find better elsewhere. Food was average, steak enchantilladas were good, nice flavor, good temperature, but the chicken burrito lacked flavor. Too pricey for what you got, people seem to really enjoy it, so don't mean to be negative nacy. Try it, see for yourself. I personally won't stop by again...but others do.

Food was very bland - which is amazing considering we ordered fajitas. Service was very slow. Loud, not much ambiance. The fresh, table made guacamole seems to be the draw, but there are lots of places with much better Mexican food that have guac that is as good or better.

Good Guac, that's about it. Convenience only draw - near "L", movies, and shopping. Restaurant is Mexican-American food for yuppie Evanston crowd.

The service was excellent and the drinks were just right! Fresh ingredients and authentic spices make this place one of a kind. This place is a must if you have the urge for Mexican food in Evanston.
Report This ReviewGood food at a good price. Hostess was not particularly friendly. Loud atmosphere. Good tableside guacamole. Worth going just for that. Margaritas are watered down & too sweet. Prepare to wait for a table, especially on a Friday/Saturday night.
