I love La Oaxaqueña!
By doradcarrera from Roscoe Village, October 8, 2008

La Oaxaqueña has excellent food and service. My favorite appetizer: Botana Huatulco (mixed seafood salad). Favorite dish: Caldo Ismo (mix seafood soup). It's family atmosphere welcomes all! It's worth your money!

Truely authentic

Truely authentic Mexican cuisine for the Region of Oaxaca. This place is not trendy and does not have a cool hip atmosphere but it's not meant to have that feel. When you walk in to this restaurant you feel like you just walked into someone's home. The service is not the best I must admit, but their food is phenomenal! This isn't you typical Mexican food. They specialize in food from the state of Oaxaca so keep that in mind...yes their stuffed peppers are sweet as opposed to the poblano peppers everyone is used to, but that is what is done in the part of Mexico. If you go and you like Srimp and Squid try the Botana Huatulco you will love it. I have ordered about everything on their menu and absolutly love it all. The Rabbit however is too spicy for me and the stuffed peppers are too sweet...with that said you must try before you can judge. You will will either be inpressed by the authenticity of this restaurant or your taste buds might not be used to this different side of Mexican cuisine. Hope you will fall in love with this cheap eats as much as I do... Enjoy!

The Oaxaquena Torta was unbelievable, great chips and salsa. Waitress didn't speak any English, but managed to order everything without much trouble. Decor is lacking,, but it's so cheap, who cares?

We went there for lunch...

We went there for lunch on a Friday, and it was a great choice. OK, so it's a store front, and the ambience is not terrific. So what. The food is. I had the nopales asados (cactus appetizer) which although a tad bland, was fixed up fine with some salt and lime juice. And the Sopa Azteca, a meal in a bowl, which was absolutely delicious. Definitely worth a revisit.

Four us ventured to this...

Four us ventured to this restaurant expecting the best Mexican food. Wow! We all felt misled by the Cheap Eats article!
We orderes ALL the dishes the article recommended and none of them were anything special. In fact, they were less than average. The chile rellenos were lacking taste and mushy in texture and the tamales were dry and under bland.
Don't order anything but beer because the mixed drinks (margaritas) come right from a mix.
The atmosphere is dull althogh the fluent English speaking staff are really nice.
If you do go, the carne asada, made with skirt steak is a good choice.

Tried this place a few...

Tried this place a few weeks ago. Food was wonderful. The chile relenos (spl?) were great but we found them too sweet to be a main course. Would make a great side dish along with the wonderful fish served in the sack. Tried the soup = great flavor. Prices can't be beat for the quality of the product.

My rating is actually 2...
By B E L from Chicago, IL, April 28, 2003

My rating is actually 2 1/2 stars. The food is actually pretty good, but just not deserving of the Tribune's Four Fork review when compared to some of the other truly outstanding Mexican and other South-of-the-Border fare available elsewhere in Chicago. The grilled octopus appetizer is outstanding and the guacamole is exceptional. Other appetizers (cactus leaves, shrimp) were fair, but not above average. The chile rellenos were interesting, but not great; the Oaxacan tamales also were good, but not the best in the city; and the steak was average. For even better food, try El Barco (Mexican) on Milwaukee; Carnitas Uruapan (Mexican) on 18th; or Mi Ciudad (Ecuadoran) on Irving Park.

This place is truly exceptional....

This place is truly exceptional. We went there as a result of the Tribune¿s 4 Forks rating. Well deserved!!!! Is all we can add. The food was definitely great. We ordered some of the things recommended in the Tribune review and found them uniformly delicious. Service was very friendly and efficient. Would highly recommend the place. Call about choice of beverages. Seems they do sell beer and tequila.
