I have been wanting to go here for years, just never made it until last night. Loved the small space, very attentive but not obnoxious service, nice wine and drink list. But the food!! Had chicken in mole sauce that was amazing. Tried the tamales and mesa boats and they were also delicious. For truly incredible flavors please go, you won't regret it.

We just got appetizers/tapas-which were way expensive and mine weren't good at all. The entrees were really expensive ($20!). In the end I guess I just wanted the standard three tacos and rice and beans for less than $10. Maybe I would go back and try a main course. The servers were very attentive. Location is not the nicest to look at, but it is very upscale inside.

Everything we had on their menu was delicious. The portions are right - you won't have to over-eat or carry a doggie pack. I would highly recommend this restaurant. As I say in the title - the best Mexican food in Chi, enough said.

This is the most innovative Mexican Restaurant I have been to in awhile. Absolutely loved it. I loved the trout and the guacomole. Some of my fellow diners didn't care for the overly spicy flavors drowning out the shrimp. But the chicken mole was also very good. Everything was just a bit too spicy and we like spice but I really loved my trout and didn't share any of it. :-)

Well lets start off by saying that I had to wait over an hour to be seated with my party of 6. I made 8pm reservations a week ahead of time, but apparently so did everyone else that night. Also, the food was suppose to be priced between 12-$16, but the entree's were priced at $20 and above, with only one dinner priced at $16.75. Now, I have no problem paying for good food/service, but when dining with a large party it can get pricey. There was also a tiny bar, with no seats so we were standing for an hour and when a friend tried to order a vodka tonic, she was told that "they do not carry Vodka." All in all it was a bad experience and very embarrassing, because it was my birthday and I chose the restaurant.

I've been dining at Sol de Mexico fonce a month for about a year. But just last week I was surprised to find out that they were no longer BYOB, and was charged $15 corkage fee. One of the main reasons I loved this place was b/c it was BYOB. I still love their Moles but will no longer go as often. It was nice while it lasted.

Went there for lunch, after seeing it on 190 North Show. The entrees were pricey, no lunch menu. $14.95 was the lowest, except for tapas. For 3 of us, drinking water was around 55.00. The guacamole was very good, my chicken mole was good, the mole was very good, the chicken was okay. The other two people ordered the vegetarian dish, it was so spicy, they could hardly eat it, and they are used to hot spicy food. It was made with ricotta cheese and black mushroom, more like a casserole. Would have been nice if they said, oh that dish is very hot, one of the persons in our party was a senior so they couldn't finish it at all.

The first time I came here (about 3 mths ago), I luv'd it - I had to come back. A group of 16 of us celebrated my fiancee's birthday and everyone enjoyed it and not one complaint. From appetizers to dessert everything was spot on! The mole is one of the best I've had in Chicago. Ricky Bayless quality food but not Rick Bayless prices. The bonus - BYOB. Definitely not a restaurant to pass up. We'll be back indefinitely!!
Report This Reviewdefinitely more than the price listed here (about $15 per entree) but fantastic food, above and beyond your average mexican restaurant. the duck in tamarind sauce was tasty and the red mole is outstanding. great, heaping ceviche offered as an appetizer is a winner also.
Report This ReviewWhat a great dining experience! We had read about Sol de Mexico in the May issue of Chicago magazine and were not at all disappointed! The place is a small gem in a very unpretentious neighborhood. Four of us dined on everything from pork to fish to beef and all was excellent! The nopalitos with shrimp were outstanding!
We came in with a pitcher of homemade margaritas and they set out the glasses, ice, salt and lime for us. Very nice waitstaff! If you are looking to have a taste of upscale Mexican without the upscale price, (and believe me, we love upscale Mexican restaurants), give this place a try. We are looking forward to making this one of our regular haunts and look forward to our next outing at Sol de Mexico with even more friends!
