Best Mexican food in Western Suburbs

For authentic Mexican food at a good value, you must try Sergio's Cantina. Don't expect good service, however, as we never have experienced any. Still, the meals are often worth the aggrivation of poor service.

Typically my husband and I aren't huge mexican restaurant fans. While we enjoy the occassional mexican fare menu, we usually aren't drawn to it. This restaurant has such a fresh approach to Mexican food. The restaurant is very clean and inviting. The menu offers FRESH food with a wide variety of choices. My favorite thing is I can get a WONDERFUL salad. The flavors in the Shrimp w/mango salsa salad are second to none. You can taste the quality! There is a generous portion of large grilled shrimp (I think you can get them coconut fried to, but the grilled are fabulous!). I have never been to a Mexican restaurant that offered such great salads in addition to a wide menu.

The pricing is mid-ranged. I have been to higher priced mexican restaurants that didn't have half the quailty. The freshness is in the flavor and you can taste it.

The fajitas are a favorite as well. While they don't come on a sizzling platter, they are tasty. I now prefer that my fajitas don't come on a sizzling platter since I am usually dining with my small children. There are now no worries of them burning themselves!

Also for appetizers- Sergio himself recommended the Aguacate Rellenos. This was similar to a guacamole witih shrimp in it! served with saltine crackers- I was hesitant about anything with saltines, but I swear this appetizer was the tastiest thing! I never would have picked it without the suggestion- wonderful! The saltines really paired nicely with the avacado and shrimp. Again a selection i never would have made, but am very glad that i did.

We have dined at this restaurant 4 times since they opened, and while there is always a learning curve for a new restaurant- I found they quickly snapped into action and found their comfort zone. Even if there was a mix-up (which only happened once when they first opened) the staff was quick to resolve it and they were always friendly.

The bar offers great drinks! Their beverage selection is reasonably priced and has a very wide selection. The margaritas were good, but the flavored mojitos were far superior to anyother place I've been.

Overall great atmosphere and great food! Can't wait to eat outside this summer!

I really wanted to like this place (Mexican restaurant within walking distance...yippee!)
But, alas, the food is not good. Very uninspired. Watery refried beans and tasteless rice. The enchiladas were boring. I've been twice, I will give it one more try in the Summer when the patio opens. Maybe they can improve their fare by then.
