So, so good

Restaurant was recommended by a friend and worth it. Did not make a reservation on Wednesday night for two thinking that a corner restarurant couldn't be that crowded, but the locals know the place to eat. Both of our meals were excellent. Don't forget BYOB.

Big Flavors, small pricetag

We have been to Mixteco at least 6 times with different groups of people and everyone has loved the quality of their meals. It is a tiny place and there is little standing room but once seated you will have complex and tasty plates. Make a reservation and plan ahead but don't try to just walk in and expect to be seated because it isn't going to happen. Great food and really worth a visit.

Best real mexican cuisine in the city!
By Leisurehound from Lincoln Square, June 30, 2009

What a great place...we were braced for not getting a table at our reservation time due to the other reviews and the hostess telling us she'd 'squeeze us in' but we were seated promptly and the meal was fabulous. The Ceviche & guacamole were top notch and the entrees were the seafood this side of the Yucatan. Highly recommend it! The space is small & open kitchen can be noisy, but that is all part of the celebration of the meal!

Delightful and delicious experience
By sms2720 from Rogers park, April 3, 2009

I was a bit skeptical based on some of the other reviews but it was a great dining experience all around. We had a reservation and arrived about 10 minutes early and were seated right away. The service throughout the entire meal was excellent and very attentive. And the best part was the food! All our choices were delicious and far exceeded my expectations. I will definitely go back again...soon!

Won't seat couples with babies!

We tried to get in several times, but the line was too long (and they managed it very poorly). Finally, on early Wednesday night we went in and there were two four tops open. BUT, they wouldn't seat us. Told us that the wait, if we wanted to bring in our (sleeping) baby (in a car seat) was going to be very long. I asked about the two tables that were open and he said they were "reserved," but when I called earlier in the week they didn't take reservations. Pretty unbelievable to have a restaurant in that neighborhood not seat us because we had a sleeping baby with us!

A Delightful Discovery!
By jamiehosh from Ravenswood Gardens, February 3, 2009

From the first sip of Sunday morning coffee flavored with cinnamon and orange, we knew this wasn't your ordinary brunch. We felt instantly transported to an authentic Mexican cafe, and received recommendations from the owner himself. His obvious passion for exciting flavors translated into the best brunch I've had in years. Can't wait to return for dinner!

Really Good Find!
By Nikko & Andrea from Roscoe Village, November 8, 2008

My husband and I are foodies and have had a hard time finding a good Mexican Restaurant around our neighborhood. We ordered Mixteco to go on a busy Saturday night and found the food to be much better than expected. The Mahi Mahi in parchment paper was better than any fish we have had at high end sea food restaurants as of late and the mole sauces on two other dishes were fantastic. We will be back!

Terrible line management!
By EM from Lincoln Square, October 28, 2008

I wish I could comment on the food, but I wasn't able to get to that point! Terrible line management! I arrived at 6:30 pm on a Tuesday evening. We didn't have a reservation; We were going to be a party of 4. The host (possibly owner?) said he had 4 other reservations for parties of 4 and that the wait would be about 30 minutes. He later revised it and said it would take about 15 minutes. We waited patiently and began to get a little impatient when we had reached the 45 minute point and still no table. He told us at that point that the next table for 4 would be ours. However, when, after 60 minutes, the next table for 4 was vacated, he told us he was breaking that table into 2 tables for 2 and giving those to parties with reservations. Unbelievable -- the guy wasted one hour of our time for nothing. We walked out hungry and aggravated, but ended up having a great meal at Avaiya (Thai). What a disappointment! To boot, there is NO ROOM to stand to wait for a table and no one offers to get you a drink while you wait (no real bar, all BYOB). The food must be good, hence the amount of people on a Tuesday night, but they need to get a grip on line management!
