El Cid is kind of a hidden treasure--it has great Mexican food (very reasonable prices), and a really cozy upstairs lounge and bar. Upstairs room has fireplace, sofas, a few tables, and bar, romantic ambience for couples, and seems like nice atmosphere for single women who just want to hang. On recent visit my group of four had marinated shrimp (BIG AND JUICY) wrapped with bacon, steak tacos (the best!) and owner even comped us for fish tacos to try out (Talipia I think) which were also excellent. Bartender was friendly, made us big margaritas just right. We will certainly recommend to our friends for friendly waitress, great food at the right prices, and unrushed vibe. Also parking across street in lot was dollar or two. We would like to keep this spot our little secret, but owner, who was there that night, was so congenial, we want to share our experience. I went with a large group of friends. The service was friendly and responsive, and had a great "neighborhood" feel. Our water and chip/salsa bowls were always full. The margaritas were delicious, and priced appropriately. The food came out quickly, hot and fresh, and tasted like authentic tex/mex. If you're in the mood for a casual, low key meal, this is a great place. I will be back.

I heard great things about this restaurant and decided to try it one night. Both myself and my guest were very disappointed with our meals. I would not recommend. There are much better places in the area.

Great Margaritas, great chips. Although I enjoyed the burrito, I felt the steak was chopped so fine I didnt know it was there. I would go back to try something else, though.
Report This ReviewHands down the best Mexican grub in town.
Report This ReviewWhat can you ask for? Great food, not overpriced, friendly service and a margarita that will blow your hair back!
Report This ReviewGreat stuff, very attentive staff, and they had a flemenco dancer there the last time I was there.
$3 margaritas are always a great hit.
Kid friendly, everybody friendly.
Good for carryout for a pregnant wife as well.
Report This ReviewHave lived in Chicago two years. Mexican was the one cuisine where we had yet to find anything spectacular. Until we went here, that is. PHENOMENAL. Chips/Salsa were great. Good sign. You can often times tell how good a place is by the chips and salsa. Margaritas are great, crowd is cool, and it's cheap as can be. I'm gonna go cliche here and call it a true 'gem'.
Report This ReviewWe went for the fish tacos. The food overall was good, nice portions, but kind of bland. My husband commented that in a Mexican restaurant, great salsa is what will truly bring him back. These were flavorful but not excellent.
We had a new waitress that made a couple of mistakes... however the pineapple water was excellent and I would stop by just for that. It is worth a try if you are in the area... the margaritas are supposed to be excellent.
What a Mexican Restaurant should be. We sat in the Patio outside, Inexpensive, good quality Mexican food.
Raspberry margaritas are great! Fish tacos were so good! I will keep coming back .
