This family-owned spot in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood specializes in tortas, or Mexican sandwiches, made here with fillings such as steak, avocado, peppers and cheese and served on house-baked bread. Tortilla chips and salsas are also made on site, as are the tasty desserts—try a slice of one of the tres leches (three milk) cakes, available in pineapple, chocolate, mocha and traditional vanilla flavors. Abuelo’s skips the requisite taqueria dining room mural; instead, a modern dining room with a black, red and silver color palette incorporates old National Geographic photos and vintage album covers on the walls. It’s a casual BYOB affair, so don’t forget the cerveza. Order at the counter, choose a seat and crack one open while you wait for the staff to bring your food out to you.
