Excellent food and workers, mediocre clientele
By Paul Spindrift from Rogers Park, March 28, 2009

Overall rating:

Excellent food, authentic, reasonable price. Chicken pita sandwich, hummus, rice, everything was high quality. Ambience is pleasant, if you can find a seat when some young, clueless couple with no food isn't hogging a table.

Authentic Wicker Park residents, too, unfortunately. A lot of tragically hip people eat here, but I always imagined that a very accepting crowd. Not so much. I committed the mortal sin of bringing young children, which probably has most of you reading this review cringing. Well, the kids, as usual, ate silently, but I got a lot of silly looks.

Sultan's Market ought to be more accepting, not just to twenty-somethings who got picked on in high school. I have more money to spend than they do, and I use deodorant.

Best Falafel
By Krystleball from Carpentersville, July 5, 2008

I will drive from the burbs just to get some of this falafel! It's the best I've ever had. It's very cheap as well. The only thing to remember is they don't take credit/ debit cards. You must bring cash. But thats a minor inconvenience compared to the great food you get here! You can almost always find parking nearby too!!

Great Falafel!
By Jamie from Wicker Park, April 28, 2008

Service was very fast and friendly and the falafel was VERY cheap (just under $4). It was absolutely delicious, and a big portion--my boyfriend and I were full from one sandwich each. The salad bar looked really tasty as well. Very cheap, fast service, GREAT food!

Great Falafel, Ignorant Staff
By Sammy from Wicker Park, March 9, 2008

If you don't know already, Sultan's has the best Falafel you can find in this city. Other highlights include the Lentil Rice, Spinach Pies, and Salad Bar.

Unfortunately, they have recently jacked up the prices on everything (some items nearly doubled in price). This is a really poor business decision to do it this way as opposed to slow, gradual increases. I have noticed a downtick in traffic at Sultan's during the dinner rush over the past few weeks which I'm certain is a direct result of the price spike.

Although it is not directly related to the food, I feel it should be noted that the guys who work here (particularly the guys at the registers, who I believe are the owners) are complete jerks. I heard that it wasn't always the case, but apparently they have been infected with a serious case of Wicker Park-style arrogance and indifference.

Just take it to go...

You don't go to the Sultan's Market for ambience or a great wine list (they don't serve alcohol). This is where you go for good inexpensive food. Get there early if you want to try the lamb swerchma. By the way, I normally hate falafel. This falafel is to die for. Bring cash - they don't accept credit cards.

I started going to this place since last year. From the first time I went there to the last time (yesterday), the food is just as good as the first time. You can't go wrong with the prices. Who wouldn't have $5 in there wallet? Great place for authentic Middle Eastern food.

best falafel in town is not a lie. The shawerma sandwiches (hot - both lamb and chicken) are amazing. So cheap...I don't care they don't take cards because I can usually scrape together the $3-$5 cash that it costs for a sandwich. So happy to live within walking distance of this place. I eat there every week. It's cheaper than making food! I can say, that when they are busy the food is fresher. I usually avoid the lamb if it's slow because it can be a bit dry. I prefer the falafel when it's super fresh as well, but that and the chicken sandwich are always great!

don't be discouraged by a line - it moves fast!

Great little place which always seems busy - though I've always found a place to sit. Best falafel in town at a fair price. The guys serving up the food are usually very friendly - the cashiers less so. And the place has personality. That goes a long way and is missing from so many places in the neighborhood anymore.
