I like San Soo Gap San and came here before it got on "Check Please", but there are some better Korean joints not too far from here. I know the area well enough to know that parking in the lot (attached) is near impossible, so I park on Berwyn and don't even worry about the parking there. Food is good and the Chop Chae (side dishes) are good, but again, if you want some better tasting food, there's 2 places only about 1/2 mile away I feel has better taste (Solga and Haw Wan Dae).

This place is a disaster. As we walked in we could barley breathe as the smoke was so potent. It took 15 minutes for the server to give us our menus. When we ordered we asked if we could have our food cooked in the kitchen and not at our table (you have to cook it your self) and they said that we would be waiting for a very long time if we ordered from the kitchen. We ordered beef and chicken and no one showed us the proper method of cooking this stuff. Food had no flavor and tasted like a regular American BBQ.. Smoke was everywhere and our waitress was no where to be found. By the time we were done eating it was an hour and a half later and we were exhausted from cooking our own meal without any help or guidance from the staff. I have been to other Korean bbq places and the better ones actually start off the cooking at your table, have non stick grills and advise you on how to cook the meat. To top it off we left smelling pretty gross from the smoke.. I would NOT recommend this place.

for me, food and value have the higher weighting. then service, then ambiance.
we always do the bbq and their marinates and quanitity are very good. the side dishes, both in variety and taste, are excellent. with korean restaurants, the side dishes are the clincher for me.
value: you do get value for your dollar. korean is not as inexpensive as chinese or thai, but in the korean sphere, this is a good value.
service: you get service WITHOUT a smile. you do have to chase after any waitress that walks by you because yours is missing in action.
ambiance: average when compared to other korean restaurants. below average when compared to american restaurants. but this should NOT be a reason to avoid.
summary: this is one of the better korean options.

I remember going to San Soo Gap San a couple of years ago and they have remodeled and changed in many ways for the good. This is my sister's favorite place to go and I think it has become my favorite Korean place in the city to go, as well. The food is great! I have a little toddler son and the center grill can be a hazard with his curious hands, so we asked for our BBQ meat to be prepared in the back and they were all so accommodating. I enjoy coming here and recommend it to many of my friends.

this is my favorite korean restaurant to go to in the city. the food is awesome, and i should know because i AM korean. the service can be less than perfect at times, but its like that at EVERY restaurant. and when your food takes a long time to come out, sometimes its not the server's fault, its the kitchen's. trust me, ive been serving for almost 10 years. bottom line - the food here is awesome and authentic. eat it and love it!

I LOVE THIS PLACE. The food is amazing, affordable prices on anything you order, and hte portions are huge. The restaurant itself, is set up so you can sit privately with your date, friends, or family. The services is friendly but don't dont get frustrated when you can't understand them...you are in their culture environment. So..just point or try to some how speak the words on the menu...they are great at understanding and very polite.

My date asked me to try some Korean cuisine and suggested San Soo Gap San, a place we had driven by often but never tried. From the start, it was a disaster. It took them 10 minutes to give us our menu, even though there were only 2 people there. They were then nowhere to be found when we wanted to give our order. I literally had to go to the back and say "excuse me" to get someone. We patiently waited for our noodle dishes for 40 minutes (no joke). I then asked the waitress as she tried to quickly avoid us how our dishes were coming along. She then went to the back and yelled some order. Our dishes were then brought out 5 minutes later. I just rolled my eyes. To make a long story short, the noodles were overdone, the side dishes looked like they had been recycled from a table that had not eaten them, and the service...(see above). This place was everything opposite of what I have experienced at Korean restaurants: cold, tasteless, and rude. This restaurant is definitely one place that should only be driven past and not entered.

I've been here several times against my will and the outcome is always the same. The food is below average for Korean style cuisine and the service is horrible. The smoke fan from our table was not working and our server decided to pull our table back while we were eating, figuring that was the problem of the malfunctioning fan. Practically knocking our food off the table, she walked off not even offering an apology. If you do not understand Korean, you won't understand the full rudeness in how the servers are talking with you. For Korean BBQ standards, the quality of the cuisine is hardly authentic. This will be the last time I will ever dine here again. There are plenty of better Korean BBQs in the Chicagoland area. You have been warned.

Simply AWESWOME.
If you're new to Korean BBQ, tell that to your server!! Seriously.
Delicious food, friendly service, and a very vivacious atmosphere.
Anyone can have a great time here, it's too much fun! I just wish they were out in St. Charles.
Report This ReviewI love this restaurant. My husband have been here 4 times already. Even though parking is always a problem, the food always makes it worth the trouble. The soups are very tasty and come in huge bowls and the BBQ is great. We've tried the seafood, chicken, and beef BBQs and we love them all. The service isn't the best and it's definitely not a good date place but if you want really good Korean food, this is the place to get it.
