I have eaten everywhere in this city, but I have never been as shocked in my entire life. Our cocktails were over $15.00 each, appetizers over $16.00 each, and entrees over $35.00 each. Thanks gosh we did not get a salad. No one could eat their entrees....very fishy or fatty, did not include what was on the menu, and all were over-cooked. My meal at Spaggia was cheaper last month. This place is a joke. If you charge big city prices, at least have decent food. Riding on the coattail of being Kosher is NO EXCUSE for tasteless, horrible food

This place is ridiculously overpriced. Our group of 4 had the Bistro Steak, Steak au Poivre, Endive Salad, Potato Dumplings and Salad Nicoise. The steaks were average and quite salty and the salads were not very fresh. The tuna in the Salad Nicoise was virtually inedible. We visited on a Saturday and were dismayed that a lot of the menu items were not available that night. For the high price, you do not get a lot of food and unfortunately, the food you do get is not that good.

Thanks to the staff at Shallots Bistro, my business meeting was a success. I was doomed to failure due to unforeseen circumstances; I kept my potential business partners waiting for over an hour and thirty minutes. That is very bad for my line of business.
I called the restaurant and explained the situation to the host that guaranteed me they would have someone entertain my guests until I arrive. “No matter how long, we got it…” Is what I heard.
By the time I came in the mood was so festive, they had a personal server entertaining them and discussing old and happy times. They were so thankful for the journey I put them thru (and of course for the 30 year old scotch) that signing the deal was a piece of cake.
Not to mention that I arrived after closing time, but was not rushed at all. The food was great; the chef was really nice to stay late and came out to let us know there is no rush, what a pleasant personality! A rarity amongst chefs.

Is our community so weak that we can only support one elegant kosher restaurant? At least we have Shallots, which although it is not as good as it was under Laura Frankel, still maintains a fairly consistent standard of excellence.

This place is going in a great direction. There is much more attention to the food. Many more diverse options. The fish choices are wonderful. and a lemon blueberrry cake to die for.
Report This ReviewThe food is described as Jewish but it is a kosher version of a modern french cuisine at a level comparable to top Chicago restaurants, with some jewish/Mediterranean flavor - such as the moroccan cigars.
This is a kosher place where one can both eat superbly and observe the laws of Jewish tradition yet make no compromises and share an excellent dinner with non-observant or non-Jewish partners. The salads are lovely, the meats are wonderful. In fact - the steaks are better than we have ever had in any restaurant, the wines are carefully selected and the desserts are mouth wateringly delicious, especially the signature black hat. After many visits we never had a less than excellent experience. Warmly recommended.
DINNER WAS PHENOMENAL!
Beautiful dining room, intimate setting, and scruptious dinner..caesar salad, herb roasted chicken, and sorbet...can't wait to go back!
Shallots Bistro was awesome! I came here on Saturday night with my friends--the music was lively and my turkey club sandwich was inexpensive and delicious!! The new chef is so sweet..he substituted my sides!!
Report This ReviewWhen I took my non kosher, non Jewish Business partners to Shallots Bistro they were tremendously impressed with the ambiance, service and the value for the dollar. Non kosher steak houses in Chicago would be much more expensive. The Chef's Special, eye of the rib filet, was perfect! From salads, soups, entree's thru desserts, and of course the wine selections, made me proud to have such a great fine dining KOSHER establishment. Go there!! Kosher or not, a Chicago fine restaurant!
Report This ReviewThe ambience was perfect when I went there for my boyfriend's birthday, but is also wonderful for going out with family or friends. The food was absolutely amazing - yes, it's kosher, but it's among the best food I've ever had, period - kosher or not. Try the Black Hat for dessert - you won't be disappointed. It's actually my favorite dessert of any restaurant I've ever been to! There's always so much food that I can't ever finish everything. Chefs Laura and Dennis are very friendly, as are the wait staff and Beth. I'm so glad Shallots moved closer to where I live.
