Simple, reasonable and delicious

My hubby and I are visiting our daughter, so we went to Sunshine when she went into work. The food was tasty without overpowering hot spices when it wasn't expected.. Complimenty tea come in coffee cups with refills. I want to return soon for our next visit to Chicago. Service was superb, and prices were astonishing. Took lots of leftovers home.

Having lived nad traveled extensively in Japan, I know what 'homestyle Japanese' food is. I can honestly say that what Sunshine Cafe serves is as close to authentic, everday Japanese as it comes. If you are looking for fancy, overpriced, Japanese food then DO NOT go here. If instead you are looking for delicious Japanese comfort food at very reasonable prices in a comfortable, casual atmosphere, then you will like this place as much as I do. The service is prompt, and the owners are very, very friendly. This is a welcome change to all the trendy, expensive restaurants on the North Clark Street strip.

I love my little Sunshine....

I love my little Sunshine. The menu doesn't change (but they often have interesting specials) and the decor isn't that interesting. But the food is homey and comforting and perfect. Don't bother with the sushi ... go straight for oyako don (chicken simmered with egg and onions in a sweet sauce over rice) and make sure to have an appetizer of gyoza or goma-ae.

I go here...

I go here a lot with my family. It get's better every time, although some of the things on the menu have aquired tastes. I used to hate the Udon soup, but now it's a must have, but the thing I go there for is the salmon... oh man is it so juicy and tender, somehow almost creamy, and sweet yet salty. Not only is this food amazing, service is great, it is pretty cheap, great atmosphere, and it fills you up, but it isn't heavy to the point that you can barely walk.

Sometimes, late at night I dream about Sunshine Cafe's simple, yet perfectly prepared, salmon. Begin with a side of goma-ae and you leave feeling wonderfully nourished. If you are looking for a ton of pomp and circumstance with which to impress your date, you should head to Rush Street.

It's places like this that make Chicago such a great restaurant town. Really good food cheap. BYOB kept the cost down for our party, but we managed to try just about every appetizer and had 6 full meals for less than $80...I had the mackerel which came with a really good spicy raddish relish. I'm going back when the weather gets cold for a big bowl of warm soup and noodles in this really great cozy little restaurant!

I have dined here on more than several occasions but I also dont get the 3 and 4 star reviews. The udon soup was not that good at all. The chicken teriyaki was the best thing I had. Other than that-the menu is not that interesting.

This is by far the best hot Japanese food I've ever had outside of Japan. The menu is small and they don't serve sushi, but for authentic hot Japanese food you can't beat this place at any price in Chicago.

I am confused as to why people are calling this the "best" unless they don't try other places. I was disappointed with the small menu, lack of flavor and simple cuisine. I am all for supporting the small busines owner, but there are so many better places in the area. The atmosphere is nice and casual and the price is unusually cheap, but we tried a variety of things and were not impressed with anything.
