This restaurant was good only for first 2 months and while it was still BYOB. The quality is gone down and service was never good. Go to original Coast or try tons of other great sushi restaurants in the city

While I love the decor, the rolls are skimpy, way overpriced, and now that they're not BYOB and have small glasses of overpriced wine it's just gone downhill. The rolls are good (not great), but not as good as the original Coast. Try Oysy or somehere not in the neighborhood.

We live in the neighborhood, but usually eat at Oysy on S. Michigan, but we decided to try this place out a few weeks ago. We had such a good experience that we've been back two or three times! Twice we've sat at the sushi bar and once had a table and I have to say that I enjoy sitting at the sushi bar more! Sometimes the service at the sushi bars are not as good as at a table, but this is NOT the case at South Coast. We've had wonderful service and they are always helpful in making recommendations on the great, fresh sushi on offer.
The only complaint I have is with the reservation and greeting staff. We've never made a reservation and most of the times we've been (usually weeknights) the restaurant has not been full, but they still make us wait at the bar if we want a table, which irritates me as its obvious they just want us to buy drinks before being seated. We usually opt to sit straight at the sushi bar (which I recommend). Other than that we love the place and will be back many more times.

I was disappointed to go to South Coast a month ago and was told after I sat down with a friend and a bottle of wine that it was no longer BYOB and that we could not open our wine. There was no sign on the door and no one told us this until we were already seated even though it was obvious with the bottle of wine we walked in with. We asked if they could open it and charge us a cork fee and they said "no". There is limited white wine on the menu and it is over priced for the type of wine and the location. We are in the South loop, not the Trump hotel. The wine glasses were also the smallest wine glasses I have seen in a restaurant and they charge extra for more wasabi or if you ask for a side of spicy mayo...come on! And if you have a party of 5 or more, they charge a 20% tip...I don't know any restaurant that charges more than 18% of parties of 6 or more. They are getting cheap and trying to nickel and dime everyone. I know a handful of people in the South loop who now go to Butterfly...its BYOB and the sushi is great.

This is my first time reviewing a restaurant but I felt obligated to warn anyone who is thinking of going to South Coast for BYOB and Sushi... think again! I have been to the other Coast and had a great time... the food was great, good service, and of course we brought a large bottle of wine. Well I did not even get so far as to try the food after being told we were going to be charged $40 for a corking fee for our large bottle of wine!! I wish I was exagerating.. $40! Needless to say I could not justify spending that on a cheap bottle of wine so we left. We went to Butterfly instead and had amazing sushi and service with NO corking fee.

I must eat here at least 3 times a week and let me tell you, everything is GREAT! The service is always fantastic and attentive, and always with excellent suggestions. The servers seem to really know and care about the fish they're selling, and always ask them for their favorites rolls to try. Shout out to Tory, who's always been a great waitress- she really knows her sushi!!!!!!!!!

We had heard this was a place to check out, but we were so disappointed. I already knew it wasn't going to be a place for me when the hostess was wearing a hooded sweatshirt. The waiter forgot our soups so we got them after we started eating our sushi. The dragon roll tasted stale. The only thing I liked was the jasmine tea. But this was definitely overpriced, the decor was pretentious, and the volume of the music was too high that everyone in the restaurant was yelling to talk to each other. We are definitely not going to be supporting this business. You'll find us at Tamarind better food, better value, and better atmosphere.

BYOB and a $1 per bottle of beer fee? Are you kidding? A party walks in ready to spend hundreds of dollars on sushi, and you insult them by charging $5 to open a 6-pack of beer (that's a thoughtful volume discount, South Coast). The most attentive service we had all night was the host instructing us about the BYOB fees. The sushi is solid; not great, but certainly not bad. If you don't mind being nickel-and-dimed to death with obnoxious fees, you'll enjoy South Coast. But remember that there are many sushi places in Chicago that give their customers great sushi without the insult.
