I have been to the ROJ in Northbrook a few years back and I remember the food was great but the best part was the atmosphere and outgoing staff! I recently went to the dtown location and was expecting not only great food, but a unique experience as well. This was not the case. Our server seemed way too busy too refill drinks and she placed one of our orders wrong with the chef. The Chef was BORING and had no personality. We tried stirring it up with him to do some tricks with the food but he was just at another routine table gettin' the job done. The Bartenders were creepy as we were waiting to sit down, and the only smile we got was from the host when we arrived. I guess not worth the $$, food was alright

I HAVE to get the shrimp with egg sauce every time I go....I try not to go too often because the egg sauce will give you a coronary. So tasty though...I even ask them to make some egg sauce for my white rice. I'm really not a fatty, I've just been going to Ron's since I was 9(!) and old habits are hard to break. This restaurant has been in my top five for 15 years! How about that for ratings?

The review mentioned knives and peppershakers flying thru the air. There was absolutely nothing flying thru the air. Very sedate. 45 per person including tax & tip, with only one drink per person. disappointing. tim fox

This dining experience was below average to say the least. We went in as a party of two at 9pm and waited for 15 minutes to be sat in a restaurant that was practically empty. I have been to many other japanese steakhouses before, and I often enjoy the different sauces and fresh veggies and meat. The portions were not good, and the food was fried in grease. I asked the chef not to put the egg yolk sauce on my shrimp and he told me "special recipe" and covered my food with it. They only offer soy sauce for dipping and I could have sworn the veggies were frozen. The meal ended up being $115- a complete waste. Also, the decor is outdated and a little uncomfortable. I do not recommend this restaurant with all of the other great places in Chicago.

This was the worst dining experience I've ever had. Traditionally we celebrate my daughter's birthday at a Japanese restaurant, starting 16 years ago at Ron of Japan when it was a fun, delicious experience. The food was bland, lobster horrible, service non-existant. Being a party of 8, gratuity was added to our bill. The waitress rolled her eyes at us when asking for an ice tea refill. The cook- they used to be creative- barely cracked a smile. Our bill was over $600 (no alcohol). A better celebratory dining experience would have been at Denny's.

Two of us made a reservation for 7:00pm but was not seated until 7:30pm.
When we got to the table, there were 4 other strangers sitting there. We were not told that we had to SHARE the table with others. All parties felt very awkward to have strangers seated next to each other.
The food had no taste at all, the only seasoning was soy sauce to dip in. The chef simply cooked the food without conversing with the customers. He rushed through so he can go to the next table. Our food got mixed up with the other guests in our table. He had to come back and cook the missing items.
After complaining to the hostesses, they did not bother to apologize for the mix up nor for seating arrangements. They were too busy maximizing the seating arrangement for the unsuspected customers.
I will not come back to this restaurant again.I will gladly take my $100 and spent it elsewhere with better service and private seatings.

I am a regular customer of Benihana, where the food, decor and most importantly service is great. I decided to try out Ron with a few of my friends, and found the decor to be quite outdated, the service to be subpar, and the food average. We like our food spicy, and the cook at our table would not add the hot sauce, nor would he even speak with us. The worst part is that they automatically built in a 20% tip with the bill, therefore we couldn't even reward based on service. If you want the total package, its worth the drive to Benihana in the burbs.

We have been going to Ron of Japan for almost 40 years..food always delicious, many good chefs, and good service.. We go to many restaurants but try not to let a year go by without visiting Ron's..one of our favorite places..

I been to Ron of Japan many times in the one downtown and the one in norhtbrook. I like the food especially the egg sauce they put on the seafood, meat and fried rice. I would recommend people to go to this place to eat. Sometimes its not about the decor of a restaurant. It is about the food, service and ambiance.
