I really liked niu when it opened. Great atmosphere, fresh & innovative rolls and a great cocktail menu. Most of the rolls now seem to contain shredded crab - it wouldn't surprise me if it came from a can. The rolls getting sloppy as well and fall apart easily. The spicy tuna & hamachi seem to have been pureed to a paste - not my preference. The Sexy Mexican is one of my favorites but when we were there this weekend the avacodo was turning which was kind of a turn off and it used to have a real kick - but no more. I hope they work out the kinks because I have enjoyed it in the past but the last few times were lacking.

I've been to Niu a couple of times and can't wait to go back. The food is great, fresh and they present it nicely. Waitstaff is always nice and prompt, the drinks are AWESOME. Dessert was delicious, lychee sorbet. Great value as well. Definitely worth a try.

Great deal for great tasting sushi. I live in the area and have tried multiple sushi restaurants throughout Chicago and truly think Niu is one of the best sushi restaurants in town. The cost per roll is reasonable and the amount you receive is more than you'd expect. It's a nice date place. I think a lot of people who live in the area go to this restaurant for their sushi. I know it's the only one that I really like.

I'm from boston and have been craving good, fresh, and creative sushi for a while. Niu was the perfect place to satify me. The food was excellent, and everyone was pleased with their meal. I'm a light eater and felt quite satiated after a specialty roll but some others I went with ate two or three. The rolls are very reasonably priced though, so I didn't think this was a problem at all. I also had mochi for dessert which was great.
The lighting felt a little dim at times, but liked the general ambiance. Our waitress was very friendly and checked up on us often. The food felt like it took a little while to come out, even though it didn't seem to be very busy. We did have 10 or so orders though, so that was probably also an issue.
I have recommended this place to friends who also went and loved it! Depending on your budget, it may seem a little expensive: but for the overall dining experience I thought it was well worth it.

We eat here about every 2 weeks. Their rolls are superb. And you gotta try their Tom Yum soup... yummy!!! Sometimes they have the lobster appetizer special which is one of my favorites. Their sashimi is fresh but the price is a little over average. Overall service is good, but sometimes you have to wave down the wait staff. However, I never had to ask for water since the water boy never let it get under half full.

I go here all the time by default, I live in the area. Every time my order is messed up or it takes an hour longer than expected, but last night was the last straw. When my order came it was wrong and I was told by the actual owner that it was not their fault. He got very snippy and blamed it on me saying they were too busy and that is what I ordered. A little bit of reference here, I get the same exact thing every time I go, which up until last night was once a week. I am going to try and stay away from here, it only gets my blood pressure rising. The sushi is OK, if you have high patients and a long time to kill. Please somebody open up another sushi spot in Streeterville!

Niu has great rolls...the Sexy Mexican and Crunchy Rolls are a must. We dine at this spot on a weekly/bi-weekly basis and have had a consistent experience. We never have to wait for a table (for 2) which is nice; however, on occassion we will have to wait several minutes before our waitor greets us for the first time. This seems to have gotten better than when the first opened.
Stick with wine, sake, or any other bottled beverage. We had dined several times where drinks are weak or seem watered down. Overall, I still highly recommend this sushi joint for a contemporary atmosphere that isn't too noisy or busy.
They also deliver now!

We love to go to this place for lunch but the service is awful. They usually have one waiter working all of the tables and he's in over his head. Two chefs working but a basic sushi order often turns into an hour+ lunch, which doesn't work. Love the food but we won't go back until they hire some more staff.

Well I had never heard of Niu (not to be confused with NIU) until my friends and I stumbled upon it last night. Our original reservations at a snooty restaurant down the street got screwed up so we decided to give Niu a shot. I have to say, the staff was beyond accommodating. They were more than happy to do a little shuffling to find a table for 6 single gals on Valentine's Day! We grabbed a spot at the bar while they did some rearranging. The adorable bartender serves up a mean White Cosmo by the way...
This was my first foray into Asian Fusion. I mean, I've had sushi before but never in a fancy joint like this. We each got a roll and shared. I highly recommend the Pink Lady and the Mellow Yellow. Delish. I honestly can not praise the staff enough after the first restaurant's staff was ruder than a CTA bus driver. (Not naming any names. De La Costa!) The atmosphere was great for date, or a party of six as we happened to be one of the only groups larger than two on this hallmark holiday. The couple next to us was snuggled up together on the same side of the table and even made suggestions as to what to order.
I would certainly return because not only was the food terrific, but I couldn't believe how affordable it was. The only drawback is that it's a bit of a hike from the train when you're wearing heels in Chicago in January. Otherwise, I have no complaints about the restaurant itself.
