New Tokyo

I stop by at this place many times and never get upset with the food. They have the best sweet potato roll, spicy unagi roll, red spider, and so on. If you have time, I would recommend you to eat at this place, but if you want rush food, I won’t recommend you to go there. The food service is kind of slow during peak time. After reading the last post, he seemed not to understand the restaurant business at all or perhaps he seemed not has a friend who works in this kind of business. I understood the servers that they work for “TIP” as a salary. Of course that they would expect 20% tip rather than 10-15% tip. I think 2-3 bucks would not be too much to pay them extra. Don’t you think so? Anyway, I would think of customers’ mind and the servers’ mind to be even.

Do not go to this place. Customer Service is an unknown concept here. The hostess treated us very badly as she was not happy with a 15% tip. I could not believe that she would question a 15% tip and behave so badly with a regular customer. The food is average and ambiance is well below average. They run a membership program where they give you a discount on future visits. But, they expect you to pay that discount back as tip or else you are in for a showdown ....
I will admit that it was partly our mistake as we went to this place multiple times as we are Sushi-novice's and were lazy to go find another place. We are never going back here as we found many cool places with excellent food in lakeview area.

while i do know new tokyo doesn't have the best sushi in the city, it's still my favorite sushi restaurant in the city. the staff is very sweet and accomodating. the sushi is great - they have the best sweet potato roll i've found. and best of all, you can't beat the price. i love going here with my boyfriend, or stopping on my way home for carryout. i've tried PLENTY of other places in the city and have been disappointed by all of them when compared to new tokyo.

New Tokyo is a good place for everyday sushi with good quality food at reasonable prices. Service can be a little slow during peak hours. Probably not the choice for a first date or if you are looking to impress or be impressed, but for consistent and affordable quality it's a safe bet.

The only reason that the reviewers below gave this place more than one star is because they are loyal customers who have been going here for years and can't seem to imagine there is any place better. Guess what, there are plenty of places better than this. And within walking distance, or a short bus ride or cab ride away. Chicago isn't that big of a place. Instead of walking to this place, jump in a cab, drive north south east or west, and I bet the first sushi place you hit is better than this place. This place is poor poor service, and the rolls are unimaginative. The dragon roll is so-so...its so plain and traditional and this place lacks any imagination. The rolls here could be served at the cold food counter at Dominicks.
Report This ReviewAvoid eating in the restaurant since service is absolutely horrible. I have tried this place a couple of times and it always takes forever. One time I waited over 1.5 hours to be served. Take out is fine, but the restaurant could use an overhaul.
Report This ReviewSushi is one of my favorite foods and I often dine at New Tokyo due to its close proximity to my residence and reasonable prices. Although this is certainly not the best sushi in town and the ambiance is nothing special, I have yet to have a bad meal or experience poor service here. Some of the specialty rolls are quite delicious such as the dragon roll, the firecracker roll, and the roll with organge slices rapped around it. There is good variety to the menu and plenty of tasty appetizers (I prefer the shrimp tempura with wasabi dipping sauce). Although I would not recommend travelling to this restaurant, if you live in Lakeview or happen to be in the neighborhood and want good sushi in a casual atmosphere at a very reasonable price, give New Tokyo a try.
Report This ReviewGREAT sushi! Very economical. Try the box-sets and you'll be full!
