The maki here was good, but for some reason I decided to order the Red Snapper. I was not expecting it to be served to be in its entirety (head, bones, and all). The plate stunk like I was walking by dead fish on lake Michigan as well...I honestly could barely stand it, and it had no taste (whatever I could swallow and wasnt too busy pulling tiny bones out of my mouth). The ambiance here is alright, pretty packed with tables, loud, bright lighting. Its not a trendy, low-key, low-light sushi place which I prefer. The service was fantastic though...I guess it was just the fish and the atmosphere.

It's really crowded and parking sucks, but it's totally worth it when you want some good tempura and teriyaki! the people are pretty nice and the food is consistent. definitely a great place to eat when you want some good Japanese food!

My mother introduced me to Matsuya when I was young, and now I've been going for years. It's my favorite restaurant in Chicago - delicious food, wonderful service, great prices, and a more authentic environment, with none of the tacky stuff I've seen in a lot of sushi/Asian restaurants.

Individual ratings don't tell the story here. Matsuya has a combination that works! But, please don't try it, I don't want it to change.
Try the Temaki dinner. And, make them get the orange sherbert back!

This might be the best sushi restaurant in Chicago. Here's why: The owner, Jong, trained in Japan, and has trained countless other sushi chefs in this city. Additionally, he owns a fish/seafood wholesale business which supplies to to about 15-25 other sushi restaunts in the city. The freshness of his fish is as good as your going to find, and compared to the other top sushi places in chicago, Matsuya is almost half the price. Tip: Try the Toro (fatty Tuna) its the best I've every had anywhere and it's about half the price of what you'll find at any other restaurant.
