The best sushi in chicago

If you go there for the food you won't be disappointed. Yes some of the waiters are someone serious but then and again there I am not here to make friends I'm there to eat. Their Godzilla for is amazing and delicious. There dragon roll will not disappoint and if you order tuna rolls, the pieces of tuna in the roll are very generous compared to other places where you can't even find the tuna in the roll LOL. Well, give it a try because its a great place.

Very average. Poor value for money.
By reasonableconsumer from Lincoln Park, January 19, 2009

I used to like Matsuya but their service and quality of food has really declined.

For the amount of money they charge, they should serve better quality food. Matsuya is not the worst Japanese restaurant but they are certainly not the best.

The service is not good. Their wait staff is not well trained and rather rude and abrupt.
They don't explain things well when you ask them what is included in the entrees etc, it is rather irritating to have to clarify things. I did not enjoy myself when my friend took me there for my birthday last year.

Plus they don't give you enough food for the amount of money you have to pay.

Mediocre quality for a high price.

Find better value elsewhere. Wake up!

The WORST sushi experience EVER!!!
By Italianck22 from Albany Park, September 22, 2008

Well, me and my cousin decide to go to this place last week when Sushi Para 2 was closing..by the way Sushi Para 2 is the BEST!!! All you can eat sushi for one price. Anyways, we get to this place and the miso soup was good. Me and my cuz had ordered 3 dishes each of different kinds so we could try each others. The server we had was HORRIBLE!!! When our food arrived we ate it, but the sushi was falling apart and one dish we ordered had caviar all on top. We did not want it. So we told our server and she said we still had to pay HALF because "it was wasting food". At this point we were both upset because we had to pay for something we didn't touch, or eat. Plus the server came over and showed us that it said caviar on the menu, when it clearly said something else in their language. Well, that wasn't even the end of it, Our server DEMANDED us to leave her $10 tip on the table immediately. We both looked at each other and thought she was crazy! We walked out without giving her a tip and we will never ever return again. Worst sushi experience EVER!!!

not so great

I hate to write a bad review esp since others have been so good... maybe it was a bad night but me and my wife's first time there was definitely sub par. The hostess was unfriendly. One of the busboys first sat us at one table, then she came along saying, "no here".. so we sat at another table, which was fine, but then she came along and just threw down menus on our table without saying another word. OK... whatever. bad start but no big deal. We ordered a spicy tuna roll, a Godzilla roll, ten don and a beer to share. Free Miso soup was fine. about 10 min later they brought the spicy tuna (no beer yet) and a few minutes later the godzilla roll. Spicy tuna was slightly fishy. The godzilla roll was huge w a big piece of shrimp tempura (good), but there was barely any eel in it. We asked for the beer again. Waitress apologized and brought it. The ten don (tempura shrimp and veges over rice) came soon after and it was oily and not crispy. We were both unimpressed overall. Oh well... we will continue to search for another good local sushi place.

Sushi Mecca Bliss

I try to get to Matsuya everytime I visit or pass through Chicago. It's just that good. I've had joyful experiences with everything I've ordered there; even the Miso soup has lots of love behind it. The one item that's heaven for me is the Futomaki. It's very reasonably priced for an incredible synergy of tastes in one roll! Live on and on, Matsuya; arigato gozaimasu! :)

Matsuya tops all!
By superchargedrr from North Center, July 20, 2008

I've been going to Matsuya's since grade school and I'm now in my 30's. I've been to plenty of other sushi restaurants and I keep coming back to Matsuya. The food is great(very fresh fish), the service is phenomenal, and you can't beat the price. Don't expect the trendy ambiance like some places in the north side but once you try it you'll be coming back for more.

great food and nice people

I have been eating at Matsuya for over 15 years and it is one of my favorites in the city regardless of style of food. Super nice wait staff, great prices, all types of Japanese family style food. Sushi and cooked food are equally great. It's refreshing to not have to hear house music while I'm eating my Japanese food.

Good Maki, Fish Surprise!
By rcky from Lakeview , March 1, 2008

Overall rating:

The maki here was good, but for some reason I decided to order the Red Snapper. I was not expecting it to be served to be in its entirety (head, bones, and all). The plate stunk like I was walking by dead fish on lake Michigan as well...I honestly could barely stand it, and it had no taste (whatever I could swallow and wasnt too busy pulling tiny bones out of my mouth). The ambiance here is alright, pretty packed with tables, loud, bright lighting. Its not a trendy, low-key, low-light sushi place which I prefer. The service was fantastic though...I guess it was just the fish and the atmosphere.
