Kuni's Japanese Restaurant: User Reviews
Kuni's Japanese Restaurant
511 Main St. - Evanston847-328-2004
i ordered four lunch orders of teriyaki chicken. they forgot to skin the chicken before cooking. the fat dangling off the chicken was disgusting. the broccoli that came with the order smelled spoiled. when calling back, the lady (mgr) who answered was phone was very rude and belligerent and was defensive and offered no positive feed back. some of the other reviews accused the place of food poisoning. in this economic climate an establishment simply cannot act in this manner and expect to be around very long. there are simply too many othere places to go. evanston market area is quite competitive with a lot of other good choices. vote with your feet and do not let your feet carry you into this catastrophe

I live just a block from Kuni.... Went there yesterday for dinner because my car was stuck in snow and no food was in my fridge. For the 3 years I've been in Chicago, this is definitely the worst Japanese restaurant I've had.
We didn't get our tea refilled until we were about to pay the tips. I think I get better service @ Mcdonald than this....
All meats were overcooked and the sushi were stuffed w/ cheap stuff. The only descent food here was the tempura which can rarely go wrong.....
I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anybody!!

Food: Great tasting. Good sized portions with good prices. I didn't see anything along the lines of extremely innovative sushi, but the more traditional rolls that I did try were all prepared VERY well and enjoyable.
Ambiance: It has a very homey feel to it. Tranditional decor made it a very comfortable place to eat.
Service: The single waitress working was very friendly but seemed to be spread a little thin. A couple times we called for her and she didn't even hear us. We went on a pretty slow night, but I suppose the few tables that were filled were still too much for her. She did manage to get the basics covered well though (Checking back often to see if we were ready to order, drink refills, etc). Food was also brought out very promptly however.

I have eaten sushi literally my whole life, and I can not believe anyone would say this place is not fresh. I have NEVER had a bad meal here, and I don't expect one anytime in the future (as long as Kuni-san is working the sushi bar). The cuts, the variety, and the freshness are never disappointing, and it is well the worth the 45 minute drive I take to get here. The prices are also very reasonable (for a sushi restaurant). Can't say anything about the service because I always sat at the sushi bar. Most definately 2 thumbs up.

I have eaten at Kuni's several times over the years and it always disappoints me. I can't believe people have rated this restaurant with 4 stars. If you know Japanese food and eat it often, this place will disappoint you. The fish is definitely NOT fresh. The prices are too high for the quality of fish. I go back every couple of years to see if the restaurant improves, but it sadly has not. If you want excellent sushi at a reasonable (not cheap) price, travel a little and go to Aki Hana in Wilmette where the fish is always fresh and tasty.

For traditional japanese sushi/sashimi Kuni is the finest in greater Chicago area. The hamachi jaw is a slice of heaven, especially for those who are sushi-newbie's. The selection of quality seafood and shellfish is remarkable. Try the toro, aji or hamachi sushi. Service can be slow. Otherwise, a perfect place. Have had "top" on the Big Island, Hawaii, Vancouver and Seattle but would rank Kuni right up there with the best. Peaceful atmosphere and a smile from the owner add to the welcoming ambiance.

Food was decent...a bit pricy.
Had better service in fastfood joints.

I believe this place is one of the best placesto have sushi in Evanston in terms of quality and price. Do sit at the bar if you are at this place...you can discuss the intricacies of sushi making with kuni-san if you do so....and laso because you would like to keep the interaction with the waitresses to as little as possible. The do not seem to be very well trained and are not that friendly. But don't let that put you off...Kuni-san and his team of sushi makers are extremely cordial and will make you feel really wanted...A chef for over 20 years, Kuni knows how to treat his customers...If you are a regular...you'll find complimentary pieces of sashimi coming your way...:). In terms of food...the sashimi here is out-of-the-world...the salmon is really good...as is the tuna...Kuni has a choice of very authentic Japanese rolls...he does not go beyond California in his americanization of sushi...so you won't find Philadelphia or even chicago rolls here.

Good food. Lousy service.
Report This ReviewSuperb fish, beautifully prepared and served. If you sit at the bar you will enjoy some extras and Kuni-sans' warmth. This is the best traditional sushi joint in Chicagoland.
