Regulars, one of our favorites
By Pita from Wrigleyville, June 26, 2009

A small, local neighborhood sushi place, it has a fresh, clean atmosphere and great value. We go there regularly and also do take out, both are very fast, you can be in and out in 30 minutes if you are in a rush. The crab rangoon is to die for, literally the best in the city, and the spicy tuna delux is also one of the best spicy tuna's I have ever tasted. Other favorites are the Jai-yen scallop, the Baby Bear Maki if you like salmon, and the orange crush, a nice combo of sweet and savory. Very well priced and excellent place to eat.

Slipping customer service

I agree with the last review. The new owners do not seem to value their patrons. Prices keep increasing and the service keeps getting worst. My friends and I are trying new local spots for sushi.

Service decline with new ownership
By Amanda from Lakeview, August 11, 2008

My husband and I have been going to Jaiyen since they first opened a few years ago. We would dine there or order in at least once a week. The portions were good; the sushi was fresh and the service great. We were very saddened to see the old owners leave, but continued to go, since we very much believe in supporting small local businesses. However, we were very disappointed to see the service and food quality slowly deteriorate. The portions keep getting smaller, the prices raising (even though the delivery menus keep listing the lower prices) and they do not fully honor the specials that they promote (i.e. free roll or appetizer when the delivery order is over $50.00 dollars- good luck getting what you were told over the phone! ) I guess with so many great little sushi places just a bit south on Broadway i.e. Makimono) my husband and I may just be giving another little family owned business a chance. One that respects its patrons and delivers its promises.

Bad Day?
By designer45 from Lakeview, June 8, 2008

All of the reviews here have been positive, which was why I went... but I did not have the same positive experience. I found that although the fish tasted fresh the rolls themselves (and appetizers) were very bland!! The prices here are less than other sushi restaurants - but they had to be the smallest rolls I've ever seen! As far as ambiance, I couldn't get past the cramped space, uneven floors - making the tables wobbly, and the orange extension cord duck taped around the floor boards. It didn't appear to be as clean & put together as I'd expected. Mediocre experience... would not go back.

good value, friendly service
By Jenny from Oak Park, May 11, 2008

This place was less expensive than other Japanese restaurants, but the food was just as good. The waiters and waitresses were very friendly. The portions were a nice size (not too much, not too little) and they were diplayed nicely too. I would come here again next time I'm near Wrigley Field.

Great decor for a sushi restraunt. Open for lunch which is hard to find in the Wrigleyville area when looking for Sushi.

I will definitely be going back for lunch and dinner.

Jai Yen is the best!!
By phirefly from Bucktown, January 29, 2008

This place is awesome and by far the best in Chicago. I used to live in that area and probably got delivery from Jai Yen at least once a week. Now I live in Bucktown and even though there are good sushi places in this neighborhood I still drive over to Jai Yen occasionally on the weekends for their sushi. Also the prices are super-reasonable! Can't beat it!

Easily the best sushi I've had since moving to Chicago. I'd recommend it to anyone... great place to get away from the noise and "scenes" of other sushi restaurants.
