I like this place. Great sushi. This is my second time here, but our waitress was annoying we felt like she was rushing us out the door. If she wasn't our waitress then I probably would enjoyed our time more.

Bartender was a great help!

We got in about 9 o'clock or so on a Friday night. We decided to sit at the bar (not the sushi bar, but the actual bar). I was really impressed. It's nice to have a bartender with the knowledge of the food as well as the alcohol she is serving. She helped us order some rolls and nigiri that were perfect and hand picked martinis to our own taste. They were really good! The quality of the unagi (eel) was excellent. It was probably the best eel I have ever had, and that is saying a lot since I have been to a lot of sushi restaurant. Meiji doesn't even come close to their quality. I plan on coming back with more of my friends soon. This is a great choice for anyone who wants sushi that is really good and not too expensive.

Great sushi, horrible service!

We had a late night dinner Friday night 9/27 with a group of 4. After the host seated us, it took our waitress 15 minutes to find our table. She told us " I guess I'm your waitress tonight then", after asking if someone had taken our order yet. We placed our drink and food order at the same time, and the miso soup arrived before any of the drinks. Another 20 minutes later, our sushi was brought to the table. Great food ( the white tiger roll is delicious!), but when we ordered another round of sushi, it again took a ridiculously long time to get there. By this time, only a few tables were occupied. When our waitress asked how everything was and we informed her it took a very long time for the food to get to our table, she mumbled some excuses and apologized. All in all, great food but horrible service. Next time we will definitely go to Meiji or Sushi Wabi!!

A top-quality BYO sushi alternative to Bucktown
By susana from Lakeview, July 17, 2008

We had a really great experience here. First, the restaurant has supremely fresh raw fish. So, everything we ordered was very flavorful. ANd there are even a few "specicalty roles" that are absolutely different from the standard fare -- dragon, rainbow, turtle, etc. I'd HIGHLY recommend the Red Samurai role. I also very much liked the scallop role, and becuase the fish is so top-rate, you can't go wrong with the sushi by the piece. Great cocktail list, but it's also BYO. And, there's a really wonderful alfresco space. We had really great service from our waitress and she was really helpful in pointing what she thought were there best items ... and she was right (Red Samurai). Really lovely indoor decor as well. If the quality stays, this place wil become a Chicago favorite for sushi.

Ok Food...Horrible Service

I was there on Friday 2/22. The place was at around 50% capacity. It took the host 10 minutes to find my reservation. We were finally seated with menu's. Another 10 minutes for our service to come over. Her section was the least busy of all. We placed our drink order. My friend ordered a martini which took 20 minutes to get so she ordered another one right away which didn't show up until after the meal when we got our check. The food is just ok. Not terrible but not the best ever.

The wait staff was friendly, but with many of Chicago sushi restaurants, he really didn't know much about their sake selections. In any case, I ordered a plate of sashimi and a friend ordered a tempura plate.

Sashimi was okay. Nothing special. Tempura plate also was so-so. Not bad, but nothing to be praised for.

The only bad thing was that they didn't turn on the AC when it was one of those 80 + temperture day outside. I didn't ask why, but my thing is that, if you're serving raw fishes, you should at least have the place cooled a little.

I'm hoping that it was just that day that they had their AC turned off.

The food was pretty good but what I'll really remember about this restaurant is the smell. I don't know what it was coming from but it was bad. None of the other reviews have said anything about it, so maybe it was a one-night thing. The food was good so I would probably try it again, but I'll request a seat toward the back next time.

The girlfriend and I went to Izumi because it was such a nice evening and we wanted a nice light meal. Since it is only a couple blocks away, it was a perfect choice. Got a table immediately and were greeted with water and a friendly server. The menus are pretty plain, but the maki and nigiri is far from plain. Drinks came fast as did the edamame. Edamame was the best i have had in the city. Ordered the dragon roll, king crab asparagus and unagi nigiri (2 pieces) and then enjoyed our drinks for about 15 minutes. Maki was wonderful...tightly rolled and very flavorful...did not use the soy or wasabi (as neither of us enjoy the "dunk" style of americanized sushi) so we dont have an opinion on that. Nigiri were very big...huge portions. Overall, a bit pricey when the bill came. But we will definitely Izumi.

Visited @ 8pm on a Thurs night. Service: can I give "zero" stars? We were one of only three total tables in the place. The other two were eating when we arrived. There were 3 sushi chefs. Why did our order (3 maki rolls) take 20 minutes?!?!? Atmosphere: decent at best. But why were all the lights on so brightly? It totally killed the mood. It's dinner time... turn down the dimmer switch! Food quality: Not bad. Nigiri was fresh & flavorful. Maki was good, but not memorable. Wish I'd read about the $5 martini special which is supposed to run through Thurs nights... ours were $9/each. Honestly couldn't recommend this place to anyone.
