Great Find!

I have dined at Viaggio twice and both times were exceptional. Its a lovely restaurant with classy yet casual decor. The first time we came with a large group and Viaggio was very accommodating. We had the same server both times. He was very helpful in explaining dishes and very personable.

We tried several appetizers and all were excellent, especially the eggplant and calamari.
Most recently we tried the veal west loop style and the pork chop with sweet and hot peppers. Both were absolutely fabulous and HUGE portions. I also have to mention the side of tortellini in white sauce that came with the veal-it was quite possibly my favorite part of the meal.
As for the complaints about price in the previous reviews, I think its pretty much on par with any nice restaurant in the city. You can get a delicious pasta dish for less than $20, and the other entrees are fairly priced generally in the $20-$30 range.

IITALIAN - DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE PRICE!
By GC Foodie from Gold Coast, September 9, 2008

There are about 1000 Italian restaurants in Chicago with just as good of food as this one for much less. The food is good, however, the selection is so limited it's ridiculous. Not only is the food overly expensive, so is the wine. When we received the check, only then did we see that we were being charged $2 extra for our drinks served on the rocks!
There was no warmth in this restaurant and there absolutely nothing to justify the price. An extreme disappointment. Next time we'll go a couple blocks over to good old Little Italy!

Worth A Try

Since I was born and raised in an Italian family I hold high standards on food. I have been to Viaggio three times because it does provide everything I loved about Sunday family dinners-the friendly welcoming atmosphere, a bar filled with gentleman right out the Sopranos and good food. What keeps it from being great is this...SALT! There is SO much salt in their sauce based entrees, especially their Rigatoni with Sunday pork gravy. In all my years in search of worthwhile Italian I have never experienced a meal that used so much salt. Salt should enhance, never overwhelm. I hoped it was a one time thing so returned to try other entrees. No such luck. Sadly ever visit, the other members of my party all agreed with the salt issue. Amazing though, we all managed to get past the salt because the taste of the food was a hit, except for the salt criticism. The apps are great, we have had every one. Yes it is very pricey, however you do get enough food for 2 meals. Drinks are very pricey as well- especially for the location. Definitely hard to make this a weekly stop. Long review short, I may go back with hopes that they realize the salt issue and adjust to make this a must visit restaurant for all who appreciate authentic mom and pop Italian food.

Extemely Overpriced

My friends and I go out to dinner two or three nights a week. We could not beleive the prices in this restaurant. The ambiance was nothing special, but the service and food were both good don't get me wrong, however we could have gone to much better restaurants and spent a lot less money. We've been wining and dining in Chicago for quite a few years and never saw pasta and drink prices so high. Who do they think they are?

Overly priced for a neighborhood restaurant particularly the Wine & Liquor
By Joel Aarons from Gold Coast, July 18, 2008

Food was more than ample. Wine is overly expensive. Ordered Vodka on the rocks--was advised by waiter to have it straight up--on the rocks was $2.00 more.
Ridiculous, have been dining out 3 or 4 nights a week for 20 plus years, never heard of this.Even Rush street doesn't have these prices.

Little Bit of Italy

Dined at Viaggio prior to event at the United Center. We were a party of 4 who could not stop raving about our dinners and sharing with each other. Waiter was enthusiastic and well versed in the preparation of the menu. A concise menu, prepared impeccably. Will definitely return.

Good food - Poor value
By bellelpc from West Loop, June 20, 2008

The restaurant had a limited menu but good food. However, without drinks, dessert, or an appetizer, our bill was $66. For Italian, in Chicago, you can find food just as good for much less. Try their neighbors on Taylor St. or on Lake St. In fact, for less than $78 (including tip) you can get 2 entrees at hundreds of amazing restaurants.
