Don't waste your time

Went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Non chalant treatment at the host station, asked for a different table and got the "please wait at the host station" line (the table was clean and ready). The pork sandwich had sooooo much fat that it was inedible. The kitchen response was "that's typical of pork shoulder". No offer to trim meat for a replacement sandwich. The waiter then asked if I would like to "risk" having another sandwich. This place is too full of itself to care about customers.

Dinner under the skies of Chicago
By klevoy from South suburbs, August 21, 2009

Anticipation to be dazzled was the focus of the evening. The new wing was magnificent, views of the city were breath taking and the weather enhanced our visit, but the dining at Terzo Piano took us by surprise and did not meet any of our group's expectations. The menu did describe the selections very elegantly but as each portion was served, I felt as though my glasses were not in focus and the portions were below the measurement of miniscule, when one prong on the fork could not spear the "potato" or the short ribs that reminded me of "crisp bacon also presentation of the dish was a little scattered looking. The dessert of red plum pudding with chocolate ice cream lost its appeal when it was served on a warm dish, because the chocolate ice cream was almost melted before we could lift a spoon to taste it. Service was average but I just don’t think I could recommend anyone to give Terzo Piano a consideration.

Pricey, but excellent

A totally delightful lunch! Both our salads (a “What Came First...” chicken & egg salad on arugula and a sesame-kissed mizuna) were perfect in every regard. The bread and parmesan crisps were superb. Cappuccino was low-key, but wonderfully prepared. Highest honors went to a chocolate semifreddo with peanuts and caramel sauce: it was transcendent -- the most enjoyable dessert I’ve had in recent memory, a dish I would request to top off my last meal on earth. Today the temperature was a bit cold (as is the décor), but the service was warm and cordially polished. TP is pricey, but it certainly delivered commensurate food value today...

location, location, location

I went there just yesterday for the very first time with my husband. We had a reservation at 11:15 and arrived a little early and took a seat in the indoor waiting area. While we were patiently waiting for our table we noticed a few things... there were an awful lot of servers hanging around, a dirty plate full of some sort was on a roll away cart and that there were already a lot of wear and tear on the floors and the hostess podium. How long have they been open? We are sat in a beautiful sunlit area of the restaurant (when making a reso tell them you want to sit in that area, the back part is rather dim and unappealing) Our server was very pleasant and was able to answer all of our questions, big plus. We waited a while for the bread service, but that was okay. We ordered the smoked whitefish app., the anti posto tray, and the mini burgers to share. They burgers were fabulous especially the shrimp one. Here is where our problem comes into play, no one thought they should clear any of our finished plates. Bussers would pass and not touch a thing... we actually started a pile and drank all of our water to see if they would clear them when they refilled our water, not one plate was picked up. For them being so overstaffed you would think at least a server would pick up the plates. I'm a fine dining server myself and felt that they were truly dropping the ball on a fine dining experience, especially one that was costing us $115 w/o the tip. My husband and I always give a place a second chance so maybe we will go in the future but not anytime soon. Maybe by then they will get the "front of the house" in tune with the "back of the house".

Still a work in progress

When you first walk in you are blinded by all the white tables and chairs. Once you sit down, the coolness factor wears thin with jazz music that is too loud, wood floors that are already scuffed and shabby , and $11 wine by the glass doesn't really take the edge off. The service was very good though, very prompt, first-class. Put some bamboo down on the floor, put some fabric on the ceiling, bring in some color accents, and lose the kitschy chairs. $7 for a glass of wine is a start. Beer is a better bet, at $5 a bottle. Ask to see the dessert menu, as there are some really great cheeses that would make a fine appetizer or snack.

Overpriced Average Food + Slow Service
By DMD312 from West Loop, June 28, 2009

The woman working the front desk seemed frazzled, although the restaurant was hardly swamped. The room is gorgeous. Very cool and cleanly designed. If you have only an hour for lunch, dine elsewhere. Budget 2 hours because service is slow. It took 20 minutes to get water and a waiter.

The food is acceptable, but hardly memorable. Everyone at our table agreed that the food was fine. Nobody described it as good or even above average. The prices are through the roof.

It was tough to get a lunch reservation at Terzo Piano. I was told I had the last 12:30 reservation, but when I got to the restaurant it was 75% full (and remained so during the lunch). Maybe that was by design, because if the room was at capacity, service would been a disaster. Still, they were turning people without reservations away at the door saying that they were full-- although you could clearly see that was not the case.

Overall, not much value here. The location is the only draw. If you like average food at high prices delivered slowly at lunchtime, Terzo Piano is your spot. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Expected OMG, got "okay"
By JenSK from Old Irving Park, June 11, 2009

I had lunch here this week for the first time. The space is beautiful, clean and bright. VERY bright. Sunglasses were almost needed on not-so-sunny day. The food was okay, but I had much higher expectations. The asparagus soup was good, but tasted more of chicken stock. The chorizo "flatbread" (really it was pizza) was very yummy though. Portions were good in my opinion...soup plus half a flatbread and I was too full for dessert. There were service people falling over each other, but they didn't seem cohesive yet. MIssing iced tea spoon. No plates for shared flatbread. Flagged down someone for fresh ground pepper. Minor things yes, but given the chef I expected more. I don't want to ask for those basic things.

Very Disappointing!
By Susie from Chicago, June 2, 2009

First of all, you need a magnifying glass to see your food, which was incredibly overpriced. $17 for a fairly plain salad. The food was either very salty or had no taste at all. Just finding the restaurant was an adventure, as there are two separate elevators for the third floor -- one of which does not access the restaurant at all. We received three sets of bad directions to the restaurant from AIC staff before we finally found the place. We were with others in the elevator who were lost, as well -- so it wasn't just us. It's a very loud place, so it's impossible to hear your table companions especially over the throbbing beat of some generic techno-type music. It was not one bit serene and relaxing like the old place outside in the garden, which they have now inexplicably closed. It's a very bad place to take your senior citizen parents or grand parents, as it is too frenetic & impossible to hear. The satin-type finish on the flooring was a very bad choice, as it showed every scuff & bit of dirt. It was really gross. Also, enough with the wacky food combinations! Pea puree in a desert? This restaurant needs to get over itself!

Pretty Awesome!

Where do I start?? The space is unbelievable. Wow. I don't think I waited very long for anything and if I did I was too consumed with taking in the entire view. I felt lucky to be sitting in that space. I'm an ex cook / culinary person so I appreciate the use of local product used in a wonderfully simple manner. Everything was seasoned perfectly and I loved all the dishes. The menu is perfect for upscale lunch in a beautiful setting. Summertime is ideal to experience all the fresh wonderful local product Chicago has to offer.

Terrible
By Hungryindeerfield from Deerfield, May 22, 2009

I would rate the ambiance, food, service and value all as poor. In spite of many management types running around, we waited over a half hour for our lunch. It was clear that the "VIP" types in the room were getting a lot of attention, however. He had to ask for bread by flagging down a bus boy. The food was not up to Tony Mantuano. My lunch companion said his salad tasted like a bunch of grass. I asked to substitute the lamb "slider" for a beef or shrimp and the server snapped "no substitutions". This is clearly a restaurant for tourists who don't mind terrible service and bad food. The total cost of the meal (no wine) was $70. Save your money and avoid.
