Tony Mantuano, chef-partner at Levy Restaurant's acclaimed Spiaggia, is at the helm of this 160-seat lunch-centric restaurant in the Renzo Piano-designed Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. Though the focus here is also on Italian fare, Mantuano uses more local and organic products than he does at Spiaggia, where imported Italian ingredients are in play. The menu offers a mix of gourmet sandwiches, salads and pastas, as well as entrees such as sesame-crusted whitefish with eggplant, cucumber salad and charmoula vinaigrette, and beef tagliata (thinly sliced) with spring vegetables and polenta. Sandwich highlights include a spinach and broccoli rabe frittata on brioche and a trio of tiny burgers: beef, lamb and shrimp. The restaurant’s sleek design is courtesy of renowned local firm Dirk Denison Architects, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Millennium Park and additional seating for 60 outdoors. Terzo Piano is accessible through the museum as well as the Nichols Bridgeway, the pedestrian walkway that connects the Modern Wing to Millennium Park, so you can slip in without paying museum admission fees.
