Spiaggia: User Reviews
Fabulous! It's Spiaggia food, service, ambience, only on 12/31, not your usual throw-the-food-at-you and charge outrageous prices. The cost for the middle seating was 125.00 pp for a 4-course dinner. Everything was outstanding.
We go there every New Year's Eve.

Dinner at Spiaggia is always a treat. The food is fabulous, the service, the timing, all first rate. It is pricey, but worth it!

Spiaggia is like food in Italy? No way. Go to Rome, find a little restaurant off the beaten path, and, compared to Spiaggia, you'll get 5x the amount of food and a bottle of wine for a TGI Friday's price!
Spiaggia is a fantastic restaurant with pointlessly expensive prices and ridiculously tiny proportions. What Metromix fails to mention is that you need four "entrées" for a meal! Between an antipasto, a pasta, a main course, and a dessert--all child-size portions--you're looking at $100+/person! And that's before you buy a single drink!
While the food was excellent, I figured out the secret to making people feel full--load every entrée with cream & fat. It's a cheap way of giving less food!
The wine list was nothing short of exceptional, the tiny desserts were fantastic, and the service was excellent--but, unfortunately, the overall value is extremely poor.
Save yourself a few $$$ and go to Cafe Spiaggia--more relaxed, better prices, similar (if not same) entrées.

I really wonder who is paying these critics to review these restaurants or if these critics have ever dined outside the City of Chicago, because (with the exception of ambiance) you pay a hefty price for quite frankly, very marginal food. Its not the ingredients as much, but poor execution. What type of chef prepares dover sole like chewing gum? They have good wines, spirits and atmosphere. I even do not have a problem with small portions, but give respect to your customers and assume they know good tasting food from what you are serving. Place is a joke.....

This is truly as close as you can get to Italy in the U.S. The food can simply be described as being wholesome and luxurious. For those of you that complained about the portion size you either A. did not order appropriatley, B. have never dined in a four star restaurant before or C. Both The food is without question at the forefront of Italian cusine in the U.S. The service is spot on but no too intrusive or militant like other restaurants of it's kind. And finally the ambiance can only be described as being opulent. Spiaggia is a Chicago destination that should not be overlooked and is well deserving of every accolade it has received.

You go here for quality not quantity.
One of the better italian restaurants in the country.
If you do not agree you do not know italian food, period.
It is pricy, but quality has its cost.

All the people on this site who rave about this place must be friends and family of the owner(s). Who boasts about bland bite-sized portions with a $300 price tag? (and we didn't even have any wine) I am not kidding when I say my boyfriend was served ONE scallop on his plate. I was laughing when I saw the measly little $24.00 morsal in front of him, until my ONE piece of $18.00 cheese-filled ravioli showed up! Then we were both laughing. We don't mind paying top dollar for excellent food, but nothing was over the top. Everything we tried was average and bland. I would recommend dining elsewhere.
Report This ReviewLike others, I was astonished at the portions. I thought I had prepared myself sufficiently, but, had to laugh when our appetizer, the buffalo mozzarella (sans fancy name) came and it was two pieces of mozzarella, each the size of a quarter. Crazy. We had the DOP tasting menu and while everything was good, none of the items were great. The mozzarella and the sole were the best. Some of the others were seriously laughable (prosciutto on a donut???). The beacon of light on the entire evening was the desert. The jewelry box of goodies was great. The service was good, but, not great. With wine (one bottle) our tab was $515. As the night went on I would've gladly paid that kind of money to transport myself to a different 3 star restaurant. Glad I went, but will not be back.
Report This ReviewI find that I have to remind myself, occaisonally, how truly expensive this restaurant is for the amount of actual edible calories you are given. Everytime, to my dismay, I am disappointed. Just a few weeks ago, I brought my aunt and cousin in from Seattle. My cousin is 10. She ordered the ravioli and was surprised to find two, WHOLE ravioli pieces on her plate. Seriously, for about $28, are you kidding me??? Please learn, Spiaggia, to give your patrons a BIT more for their money. The view doesn't cut it...bottom line. I will not go back.
Report This ReviewPut simply, Spiaggia was among the best restaurants to which I've ever been.
You won't get out of there without spending an arm and a leg but in my view, the flavors are more than worth it. Do not listen to other reviewers who may complain about the size of the portions--they are small yes, but you won't walk out of there hungry if you follow the direction of the waiter and order 3 courses.
I had the risotto and my wife had the gnocchi--both just melted in your mouth. My mother's seafood entree was done perfectly.
Every detail from a service perspective is tended to without being overwhelming. They seem to appreciate your business without being overtly pretentious.
I will certainly be back the next time a special occasion is to be marked.
