Excellent Italian Food

I went to Rose Angelis for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Having studied abroad in Rome back in college, I can be very judgemental of Italian food and find most restaurants serve overpriced, mediocre, unimaginative "Italian" food. But at Rose Angelis, I was pleasently surprised. We had a salad, the duck ravioli and a special gnocchi pasta in a provolone cheese sauce. It was SOOO good. While waiting to be seated, my boyfriend and I had drinks at the bar and he accidently spilled his half-empty drink. The bar tender refilled it and didn't charge him for the second drink, which was a nice surprise since we obviously expected to pay for it! Our server was charming, very knowlegable of the menu and made excellent recommendations. Not one part of our meal disappointed us--from the creative menu options, to the ample wine list, to the friendly service and romantic outdoor patio seating, this place is high on my list to return to. In fact, I'm taking my parents there tonight!

Trendy; though reasonably priced, ernest food. Bring a spare stomach...

Cozy, boisterous environment full of trendy pretentious Lincoln Park'ers. Pretty much what you would expect from looking at the front of the building and surrounding neighborhood. Got the impression my wife and I weren't part of the special club that must congregate here daily... We waited twice as long as were told by the host when we came in, while we watched people (who appeared to be regulars) walk right in......

But we came for the food, not the atmosphere; which became tolerable after a few glasses of wine. This place's biggest downfall is portion size. I would happily pay the same amount of $ for half the food with more attention paid to detail. I have no complaints to make about the flavor of anything we ordered (pizza del giorno Appetizer, Duck ravioli Entree, & Portobello Chicken Entree). I am just not a fan of taking home more than we actually consume at a restaurant. We were hungry but still blown away by the portion sizes. I dont think it is unreasonable to expect to be able to share an appetizer and be able to eat most of my entree. Here this was not possible. When our waitress came around to offer dessert all we could do was laugh and point at the three container high tower of takeaway in front of us.

A bright side was our waitress who was really nice and relaxed which helped temper the atmosphere.

The food was tasty; however with the ocean of dining at your footstep in Chicagoland, not worth returning for.... (unless someone else is paying :)

get this to go.

i have really liked all the food i have tried here, which has been almost everything on the menu. i hate to have to say though, the service, from host to wait staff, not very friendly or attentive. i too did not like the wine glasses, it cheapened the wine for me. (i don't care how they serve it in europe!) the food may be really good, but every other part of the experience has always been disappointing. maybe get take out, bc it is extremely noisy no matter what day of the week. there is a much better ambiance almost anywhere else.

What happened?

I've eaten here several times, and last night I was shocked at how horrible the service was and the way in which we were treated. We had a baby in our party and they should have just posted a sign on the door saying "no babies allowed" because it was clear he was not welcome.. and he wasn't even crying. Our server stopped by our table three times (to tell us specials, to order appetizers, to drop off check).. we had to flag her down to order a slice of tiramisu. Even though the food is great, I'll be hard pressed to return given the way my nephew was received, and given the fact that the service was atrocious. Not even the busboys were friendly.

Hands down...one of the very best!

Thi s is my first review but I felt compelled to write because Rose Angelis is one of the very best restaurants in all of Chicago. I've been going there for more than 7 years and have a fab experience every time. For a memorable meal, come hungry and start with the pizza special and try to save room for dessert -- it's hard with the innovative pasta entrees!

To all of those people leaving negative reviews..first if you were asked to not be so loud you probably had a couple bottles of wine and were being too loug. Take it with a grain of sald and move on with life, there are bigger problems in the world. To the other individual if you don't like cream in your sauce then order it without the cream, its really that easy. Stop trying to find somthign to complain about and enjoy this wonderful place. With an always helpful staff, and a wonderful atmosphere, and unbelievable food you can't go wrong. They will even call you at the bar next door when your table is ready. Five stars over and over again!

always on my list of "must eats"... with their robust pasta dishes and savory infamous bread pudding... last night was such a disappointment. the seafood pasta, spinach noodles with chicken, chicken marsala = tasteless, forgetful, "could do better at home". being the only veteran diner, i hyped up the place only to shocked by the "tomato sauce" dish. we had a wonderful server only to be overshadowed by a hi-strung host, however. way too many excellent restaurants in chicago to continue dining at now sub-par rose angeli's and certainly not worth the wait for hunt's tomato sauce.

A Truely Delicious and Romantic hot spot
By AEP from Chicago, January 7, 2008

The food is some of the best I've had in this city and we eat out a lot. The menu changes but always keeps with its innovative array of tastes and new flavors. The salads are great to share as a starter and the pasta dishes are always exceptional! We recommend Rose Angelis to friends often and they always thank us and rave about how wonderful it was. As for the negative reviews I read below, you can go anywhere and have a bad experience if you're looking for one, not every server is going to be perfect every night, and sometimes you just order something that isn't a favorite. But at Rose Angelis there is ALWAYS great food and a smile when you walk in the door!
