Quality declining....

This was always one of my favorite places to eat pizza and homemade pasta since the 90s. I didn't realize that the family sold the business in 2004. Now it all makes sense. The proportions have progressively gone smaller and the prices have gone higher. The last couple of times I tried to order, they couldn't take my order because their computers were down. I said I would pay cash. That didn't matter. Apparently the stoves don't work when the computers are down- Ha! The next time I called they were out of everything that I ordered. I thought the pasta was made in house?? The quality is just not the same in the pasta. Really small portions, barely any sauce. The Raviolis aren't as good. It's so sad to see a historically great place change for the worse. I may give it one more try....If disapointed again, I'm moving on....

This Place is Great

I never have any complaints when I go here. The food is reasonably priced & delicious. The Italian sausage sandwich is probably one of the best I've ever had. It's enough for two people. It's like a foot long on a fresh baked loaf (yes, loaf) of bread with a wicked marinara sauce. But you have to say sandwich, otherwise you'll get just the sausage on a plate. Try it with the Italian seasoned fries. They're not fries really; they're chips, but they are outstanding.

YUM! The food is the standout at Pompei, I recommend the Pompei Pizza. They have a huge pan pizza that works well for take out. Especially if you ask them to cut the pieces smaller, they oblige. Our guests were more than happy with the food.

First of all, my order took very long, despite the fact that it was just a simple linguini aglio olio. When I asked the girls at the pick-up/take-out counter about my order, they were very arrogant and rude.
Once I received my order, I found out that they made a mistake with my order. The only positive note is that the manager on duty was very understanding and hospitable; he took care of the mistake right away.

It's really hard to screw up pizza, but somehow Pompeii manages to do so. I live on Taylor Street and remember the good ol' days when Pompeii was a small joint down the street from its current location and they really put their love into all of their dishes. Now that they've spread out across Chicagoland, their once-great pizza is now mass produced and bland with hardly any sauce and absolutely no taste. Too bad. No matter how many second chances I give the place, I'm consistently disappointed.

Pompeii, How do I love...
By Orlando Roberto from Chicago, IL, November 4, 2003

Pompeii, How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...No tipping, great salads, unlimited and well-calibrated soda machines. The Taylor Street is the best location by far for food. Their pastas are a little on the bland side, but their dinner specials can't be beat. Their pizza is good, but could use more sauce. But all things considered, the value is amazing. Especially good for large groups. I would not hesitate to take visitors here.

The food is fantastic and the price is right. Tipping is forbidden and the service is great. You can order a four dollar Pizzicotto and walk out full. Everything from the salads to the pastas are loaded with authentic Italian flavor. Pompei continues to sit at number one on my favorite place to have lunch in Chicago.

I really enjoy the pizza...

I really enjoy the pizza and salads at Pompeii. I have never had a bad experience there and I really enjoy how they usually service little samples of pizza as you walk in the door. I feel their pizza is excellent, with many different variations from four cheese to eggplant.
