Pizza D.O.C.: User Reviews
Pizza D.O.C.

This is my favorite Italian restaurant in Chicago--why? the Pizza is truly Neoploitan--fire baked crusts--fresh ingredients. The pasta is stupendous--one of the only places in town that serves an AUTHENTIC Bucatini Amatriciana--simply delicious. The wine list is good--with a few unique vintages at a reasonable price--and the desserts are all home made and delicious. I've always felt at home with friendly service and the owners are on site and want feedback. Oh--and the Parking is EASY.

Like so many Chicago pizza joints, this place doesn't garner any awards for decor or servers who can be brusque at busy times ... but IMHO their thin-crust pizzas surpass the national chains and many local pizzerias. The crust, razor-thin in the middle and crisp around the edges, was perfection. Toppings were abundant and tasted fresh. Elsewhere on the menu, the Chicken Marsala also exceeded our expectations.

Pizza DOC offers an incredible Sunday brunch that is the price of one entree and you get a taste of almost all the entrees! It is incredible food... and lots of it for a very decent price.

I am new to the neighborhood and enjoyed this quaint little restaurant. It's small and not a lot of room to move around. But the food was really good and the service was great. Just make sure to make reservations on the weekend.

I've eaten at Pizza D.O.C. for many years, and it has been a slow slide down in terms of quality, taste, service and value. We ate there about a year ago and were extremely disappointed. We decided to give it one more try last night, and we regretted doing so.
The restaurant was half full on a Friday night at 7:00 pm. There were many servers and a full bar staff. The hostess was distracted and not particularly welcoming. The bread and olive oil were of poor quality. I was especially disappointed in the doughy white bread - in the past the bread was excellent. The waitress was rude with an attitude. We waited twenty five minutes for our food, flagged her down and asked if she could at least bring my six year old daughter's pasta with olive oil. She said "no, you just have to wait for the food to be done." The wait was due to her handling of the order. She brought the wrong food without apology. I ordered a salmon dish for $18.95. It was tasty, but nothing special. My friend ordered a pizza with arugula and prosciutto. Because our waitress confused multiple orders at multiple tables, I was done with my meal before my friend's pizza was delivered. No apology, just bitchy service.
Much better service, food and ambiance at Spacca Napoli.

The pizza crust is fantastic. I would like to try other dishes when I go here, but I'm always drawn to the pizza. The pizza boscaiola has so far been my favorite. The salads are worth the trip also, I've tried two different ones, but don't recall their names. One was the celery salad...which sounded like something I wouldn't like, I tried it from a friends suggestion, and I loved it.

I have been here twice (first to try it, second because our first option fell through) and have not been impressed. The restaurant tries to be a step above family restaurant, but its large, noisy dining room feels like a typical pizzeria.
My arugula salad tasted okay, however the tomatoes should not have been served as they were rubbery - were not fresh and were probably kept too long in the refrigerator.
A few of the pizzas on the menu say they use fresh mozzarella but they use the same generic pizza mozzarella one might find at Domino's or another fast food pizza place. When we asked the server about this (expecting an explanation like "sorry, but we ran out of fresh mozzarella") she was upset for us asking. She admitted that they don't use fresh mozarella on the pizzas anymore, but offered no apology or statement like "sorry, we hope to have the menus changed soon."
The sauce on the pizza was bland and not seasoned well, cheese was in abundance, making it watery, greasy, and heavy (NOT neapolitan in the least). The dough was tasteless. I ordered the Porcini pizza - big mistake as the porcinis were slimy and tasted dull. I considered sending it back (and probably should have) but based on the other orders at our table, I doubt anything offered by this sub-par restaurant would have satisfied me.
Service was poor. We did come to the restaurant later in the evening (around 9pm). There were a few tables still occupied. Perhaps the staff wanted to leave and were upset that we came in (if that was the case, choose not to serve us - don't take our money in exchange for a poor experience). Will NEVER return.
If you are in the mood for neapolitan pizza, go to Pizza Art or Spacca Napoli. They are both located close to Pizza DOC and have MUCH better pizza, provide a better ambiance, and are fairly priced.
