The Crowd is better than the Ice

This place is a melting pot of the rich, the poor and guys wearing wife beaters. There was some good people watching, with plenty of pretty local girls. I found the Italian Ice to be a bit bland. Its heavy on the sugar and thin on flavor. Marios is jammed in the summer, and I was not that impressed considering it very inconvenient to get to if you can't walk there. I imagine its a first-and-last-trip kind of place if you don't live in Little Italy.

Refreshing. This long time Chicago summer tradition is sure to please everyones taste buds. My parents as young kids enjoyed the refreshing taste of Mario's. When ever we have out towners in during the summer Mario's is one of the first places we visit. We love Mario's.

I grew up in the old neighborhood...

And we ALWAYS walked down to Mario's on hot summer nights! Where else can you get a Watermelon Italian Ice with the seeds in it?! How much fun is that?!
We always got a bag of pistachio's to munch on and would toss the shells on the sidewalk. After that my Italian Grandma would line up lawn chairs along May Street and we would all sit out on the sidewalk eating our glorious Mario's treats and talking until midnight! I sure do miss those days!

I surprised with how few reviews are on here! Like someone else mentioned, I can fondly remember weren't many things better on hot city night in the summer than taking a stroll down Taylor Street to Mario's to cap off a long day.
Its only $1 and it tastes great, you can't go wrong. If nothing else, just go there for the atmosphere around dusk.

great family exprience to have with your kids. my husband grew up around there and we started going when we were dating. now that we have a family the kids love the whole idea of going there and getting their cup of ice. it's great that little shack that could is still thriving after all this time. its an old school gem that is standing the test of time. i would be so upset to ever see it go. where else can you say is still around and stayed more or less the same from your childhood?

god has truly blessed you when on a hot summers night you find yourself standing in line at mario's. few places in the city offer such a treat for the soul. people from all walks gather and talk while waiting for their turn to procure a tall cup of frozen bliss. rarely have i been happier then when i am sitting on the stoop having a lemonade and watching the world go by.

Mario's rates a 4 star...

Mario's rates a 4 star because it is unique.
Mario's lemonade is what my wife craved during her first pregnancy 21 years ago and I made the 30 minute round trip many times. It was well worth it. We always stop there if we are passing through Chicago.
