Christine Spatara, with husband Anthony and children Anthony Jr. and Licia, has run L'Appetito, an Italian-influenced delicatessen, since 1980. (A second and larger L'Appetito is located in the John Hancock Center, 875 N. Michigan Ave.). Christine was born in Calabria, Italy, "Tony" in Sicily; the deli's ingredients are just as Italian. Selections include eight submarine sandwiches, seven grilled sandwiches called tostinos and eight "Italian specialties" including a sandwich called "La Bomba." Along with soups and salads, L'Appetito also offers cannoli, tiramisu and specialty coffees. After sampling an excellent Italian sub that blows away anything Subway concocts, this writer can understand why L'Appetito has not only enjoyed a steady clientele on the Gold Coast, but established a second store on the Magnificent Mile. "We see the same people all the time and know everyone by name," Christine said. "It's homey, like a little neighborhood grocery store. We pay attention to our customers."
