On an average day, Fontano's sells 700-800 sandwiches at its Polk Street location. Third-generation owner Neil Fontano says his establishment is very family oriented. There are four tables, but patrons aren't required to eat there. They can eat wherever they want, according to Fontano--by the store shelves, by the window sill, maybe even at the desk in his office (if he's in). ''We're a business that makes you feel like you're part of the family,'' he says. In addition to selling subs, Fontano's is a small grocery store, selling Italian favorites like cannoli and giardiniera (Italian vegetables in oil), which is shipped across the country.
