Chef Todd Stein, who’s logged time at MK, David Burke Las Vegas and Bank in Minneapolis, runs the show in the kitchen at this modern Italian spot on the second floor of Loop boutique hotel The Wit. (The hotel's other eating and drinking establishments include 27th-floor cocktailing destination Roof and a more casual breakfast-lunch-dinner restaurant, State and Lake.) Though Cibo Matto translates to "crazy food," Stein's menu is actually quite focused. Wine-friendly starters and a selection of meats and cheeses get things started, while ingredient-focused preparations such as Lake Superior whitefish with peperonata, and pork porterhouse with balsamic-brown butter glaze star on the entree portion. The Johnson Studio, whose portfolio includes Tru, designed the chichi space. Look for a 10-foot glass-enclosed cheese and salumi case, a 2,000-bottle wine vault, a chef's table in the kitchen and a 30-foot ceiling fresco by Todd Murphy, who is said to count Sting and Elton John among his fans.
