Marigold Indian Restaurant: User Reviews
My wife and I currently live in London, where the national dish in the UK is chicken curry, so we've had our fair share of Indian food. When we came back to Chicago for a visit, we took our family to this new modern Indian restaurant in Uptown we heard about called Marigold My parents had never tried Indian food in their 60+ years, so I was a bit worried there wouldn't be anything they would take to. However, after 1 minute listening to the extremely friendly, knowledgeable wait staff, I knew we would be in good hands. I had the samosa to start, they were flaky and near perfect. Murg makhni for my main dish, my wife had the veg Thali, both were fantastic. My parents had the lamb and tandoori chicken, and loved it. I think it's safe to say Marigold now has some loyal customers and we're defintely coming back...even my parents said Indian food would make its way onto their list of food favorites, with Marigold the reason why. I'd recommend this spot to anyone and would put it on the list of top new restaurants in Chicago...

I have really enjoyed Marigold since they opened. I have consistently experienced great food and really attentive service. My favorites are the samosa appetizer and the murg makhni entree. Their wine list is also quite complimentary to the menu. The only downside for me is location, I live in Wicker Park so it's a little out of the way but worth the trip!

For starters I am Indian! I've been to more Indian restaurants than the owner/staff of Marigold. The food is OVERATED!!! Anyone who has experienced Indian food can tell the difference. Just for example the Naan served here is not the same. They don't carry any traditional entrees. I felt like I went to a restaurant, they took my order and went in the kitchen and opened up some frozen entress and heated the item up and served them. I would not return to this establishment, no matter who is paying for the meal!!!!!

Marigold was a very big disappointment for me. After much anticipation, we finally had a chance to get to Marigold. But from the very beginning the experience was very sour. Despite having a reservation I was made to wait for 22 minutes. Moreover the manager and wait staff seemed unapologetic.
The decor was average, with little or no ethnic touches. The restaurant was loud, to the point where we could hardly hear our waiter. The menu was very inadequate compared to other Indian restaurants, and was missing some Indian staples like Dal Makhani and the usually very simple Chicken Curry.
The food is basically "fusion" and does not do justice to wide variety of spices and flavours that Indian cooking normally uses. We had the lamb chops, Lamb Vindaloo, and the Chicken Breast. All the dishes were just edible at best. The lamb was very tender, but the sauce of the Vindaloo was too sweet. None of the flavorful spices that indian cooking is known for made its way to the taste buds, and neither did they provide any compliments to the underlying meat.
For dessert we had Kulfi, which was probably the best Kulfi I have had in Chicago. That was the only saving grace of the evening. If you are looking for an Indian Restaurant please avoid Marigild at all costs.

They suck. You are better off driving to Devon. You would think for the overpriced small portions the food would be seasoned better. The waiter we had was very "catty" too. I will never eat there again.

This was my first visit to Marigold--and it surely won’t be my last. What a delightful menu (backed up by fine ingredients and good cooking, too)! The indoor ambience was compromised a bit on this early Saturday night by the noise from a wedding party in the vicinity of the bar, but it was a pleasant meal nonetheless. The selection of small plates is fabulous, so we made a meal of “Indian tapas.” The star of the show was Duck Leg Dum, a terrific Indian take on duck leg confit served with truly outrageous spiced green beans. Another standout was Saag Paneer, the often-dull spinach/cheese Indian restaurant that is anything but dull at Marigold: they use fresh spinach, perfectly spiced and sautéed. Calamari Bhaji was very fresh and tender, and was served with a kicky, flavorful chili sauce (my only complaint was that the accompanying crispy onions were too salty for my taste). A roasted beet salad with arugula and almonds was pleasant. The wine list is commendable, with good choices (e.g., riesling, gewürztraminer, tempranillo) by the bottle for this type of spicy cuisine at affordable prices. Our extroverted server was attentive and helpful. I know I’ll be looking for excuses to get back to Uptown just to sample all the other goodies on the Marigold menu!

My wife and I have been to Marigold several times and felt compelled to write about how good we think it is. Each time we've been to Marigold, the food has been sublime and the service outstanding. We just wish it were closer to us. It's a pretty good value, too, considering the quality of the food. I recommend Marigold to anyone that asks, and they're never disappointed.

As someone who frequently dines out and is willing to spend hundreds of dollars for a great meal and dining experience, the appetisers, main entrees and beverages at this restaurant are extremely overpriced. $5.95 for a bottle of beer - come on now! Main course portions were extremely small - if you are hungry you will need to order two main courses! Main entree (lamb) was totally tasteless. If you are looking for decent Indian food, I strongly suggest you drive a little further North to Devon - your meal should be far better and your bill will half as much.

I decided to try Marigold after reading the rave review from TimeOut Magazine and its Reader's Choice Award for 2007 Best New Restaurant. While the ambience and colors were cool, the food was incredibly overpriced and mediocre. The samosa's were served cooler than room temperature, and tasted good, but not great. The lamb rogan josh was absolutely horrible - the worst I've ever tasted, completely bland, no flavor at all. The duck leg appetizer and tandori chicken had some flavor but again not what you'd expect for an Indian restaurant. The only positive thing I can say is about the service, which was very good. After spending $62 for two, I went home with a tummy ache.
