I hadn't been to an old fashioned ice cream parlor in years, and Margie's did not disappoint! Located just east of the Montrose brown line station, Margie's offers a gigantic menu of ice cream and fountain creations, but a wide assortment of candies as well. I had the banana nut sundae, which contained two scoops of ice cream, an entire banana sliced, nuts, whipped cream and a cherry. For 4 bucks I thought I got an amazing value. I'd take this over Oberweis and Cold Stone any day! Margie's is definitely a sweet deal!

hot fun in the summertime. or autumn, or fall....

I took a leisurely stroll northward on scenic Milwaukee Avenue one sultry summer night this August with a female companion. After a great dinner at Earwax Cafe, we craved a cool dessert. Ten minutes later, we were in line at Margie's. Plenty of bustle about the place: local families with kids in tow intermingled with obvious visitors to this ice cream mecca on the outskirts of Bucktown. It was a gorgeous evening so we didn't mind the wait, which turned out to be quite short--five minutes tops--on a hot and busy Saturday night, no less. We were ushered into what must be the tiniest restaurant in existence, for sure, but were relieved to be seated at a comfy, roomy booth, surrounded by a collection of tchachkes to rival all tchachkes. Definitely a portal into a more innocent time. The service was curt, the menu was gargantuan. We both ordered sundaes. They. Were. MAGNIFICENT! Mounds of freshly-made ice cream topped with incredible caramel and chocolate sauces, nuts, and garnished with a wafer cookie and one of Margie's signature candies. But the real treat was the gravy-boat of homemade hot fudge provided, the most decadent chocolate I may have ever tasted. Drizzled over our ice cream treats, we were in heaven. When we'd finally devoured our awesome creations, we wanted more, but prudence ruled, and we went home very, very happy. So if you don't mind a little wait, utilitarian service, and some seriously retro surroundings, you'll be rewarded with the most remarkable ice cream experience Chicago has to offer.

The ice cream must be a lot better than the chocolate. I stopped in to try a few of the individual chocolate pieces, and was really disappointed to find that they were largely flavorless. Each piece was filled with a sweet white creme, very reminiscent of Whitman's Sampler (not in a good way)-- regardless of the flavor listed, all the fillings tasted sweet and nothing else. The chocolate was grainy and not creamy. Sounds like I should try a sundae next time and skip the candy.

I have been to this place several many times for their delicious ice cream. Their menu is unbelievable in that they offer a plethora of ice cream selections. The service is great, even when it gets crowded. The ice cream is delicious and the hot fudge is to die for!

Crowded even when the weather is cold! More tables would help, but I love the atmosphere. That should tell you how good the sweets are. I've never had any of the food, just dessert, but the desserts are HUGE, the ice cream homemade and the toppings delicious. Our server was so friendly and helpful. I can't wait to go back, only I'm splitting the banana split next time since it was so big!

This place is amazing! The service was very friendly, the ice cream was fantastic (and HUGE!). It's definitely a great value and a fun place to go with friends. I've only been once for the banana split, but I'm definitely going back to try some homemade candy, too. What a great find!
