Named after Domingo Ghirardelli, an Italian chocolatier, Ghirardelli chocolate was first brought from Peru to San Francisco in 1852. Today, Ghirardelli Square is a historic site in California. Opened in 1996, this shop stays true to its California origins by serving treats named for the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and other landmarks. Split the mammoth Earthquake Sundae ($19.02), which serves four or more. Designed like an old soda shop, Ghirardelli's has a long bar, a checkered floor and ceiling fans. A gift shop sells chocolate to go.
