Viet Bistro is phi thuong (wonderful)!
By Mojoman from North Shore, February 2, 2009

Overall rating:

Viet Bistro is phi thuong (wonderful)! C’mon Chicagoland diners—forget about Blago and Burris, celebrate Barack, and treat yourselves to Banh Tom—a fried sweet potato and shrimp appetizer that’s to die for!

This off-the-beaten-path—Devon just east of Ridge--descendant of Pasteur was alarmingly empty of patrons this past Saturday evening. Sure it was a chilly 6 degrees and this isn’t much of a walking neighborhood, but the food and comfortable setting were well worth our drive.

We kicked things off with duck spring rolls, stuffed shrimp rolls and the aforementioned banh tom—delish! For entrees, my wife went with catfish in a clay pot and I feasted on curried beef. Cute-as-a-button Courtney—a dead ringer for an actress whose name we couldn’t recall—made sure we wanted for nothing, including martinis made with locally-produced North Shore vodka.

I’ll be back—and I’m bringing friends!

Fantastic Food. Great Service. We had a great mix of appetizers, a curry seafood soup and then some curry beef that was perfect for a cold winter night. We had a lovely corner table with attentive, friendly service. We will definitely go back soon.

a great place for a party, something new in the neighborhood...
By Saria from East Rogers Park, October 3, 2008

Your charming host, Rashid, is among the top 10 mixed drink bartenders in Chicago. I was torn betwen bouillabaisse - combined catfish, squid, mussels and shrimp in a tomato base - and cocinchin (chicken with fat noodles, sauteed in peanut oil, dusted with peanut oil and bamboo shoots seasoned with lime and ginger) for dinner. I loved eating cocinchin with chopsticks. My guest and I shared grilled eggplant (it looks like sushi), one of several side dishes that would complement Rashid's drinks. Trio of sorbets baked in white chocolate shell with a hint of rum is to die for. Prices are reasonable. I rate Viet Bistro 4 stars.

This restaurant is top notch!

We just returned home from a fabulous dinner at Viet Bistro. My husband & I had been there a few times before & wanted to take our daughter & son-in-law. First of all the place
is stunning, modern & top notch all the way. The food is beautiful to look at & even better to
taste. The skewered grilled beef appetizer was great as were the duck spring rolls. The entree fish was terrific as well as the beef tenderloin. The eggplant side dish was a winner. We ordered a great bottle of French Rose...it was a warm night & we sat at the
open French doors. It felt like Paris!! They sent over a complimentary dessert as we had ordered a whole bottle of wine. We all can't wait to go back.

Bland Food, Horrible Delivery
By Bill Keim from Ravenswood, August 23, 2008

Overall rating:

I ordered delivery on a Saturday night. The delivery driver made fifteen calls and could not find the place. I had to walk to his car, blocks away! The Pho was the blandest I've ever had, my order was not correct. I've had better broth in an instant packet, I mean come on. Spring Roll portions were tiny and poor value. I grew up eating at Pasteur, this was a horrible experience. Stick to Argyle street, Tank Noodle or Pho 777 or Ben Tre Cafe at Kedzie and Touhy, which is MUCH better.

A Birthday Treat
By Mona1 from Rogers Park, June 9, 2008

Overall rating:

My husband and I dined here for my birthday, and had an overall wonderful experience. Rashid, the sommelier and host, was very knowledgeable with menu items and ingredients. He immediately intuited that we were interested in vegetarian fare, and was able to make excellent recommendations for our meal. The cocktails are fantastic! Fresh fruit juices are highlighted, like lychee, jackfruit, cantaloupe, mango or guava martinis. They have drink specials throughout the week, so even with many specialty cocktails and draught beers, appetizers, two entrees and dessert, we didn't spend more than $35 per person. Our dessert was a happy-groan inducing chocolate mousse duo with morello cherries, and when I mentioned that it was my birthday, Rashid threw in some delicious fruit sorbets as an accompaniment, as well as mixing up some awesome guava cocktails as a birthday treat. The decor is modern and hip while still remaining authentically asian. Parking was easy, and the lounge is a cozy spot to hang out if you're only there for the drinks. We plan on returning as soon as possible, with friends in tow. So nice to have such a hip, yet utterly unpretentious and inviting place to go in our neighborhood.

good times, great food, fabulous cocktails...
By northside girl from Edgewater, April 11, 2008

I like that this is a great "neighborhoody" but trendy place! it has the feel of being downtown but away from the pretentious crowds and traffic... the food is great, the service is very attentive and the speciality drinks are delicious. I wish that the crowds that also frequent uncommon ground would also come around & check out this great spot, I would love to keep it in the 'hood for years to come!

A Neighborhood Gem!
By Lib811 from Edgewater, March 4, 2008

Viet Bistro is a delicious and excellent addition to Edgewater/East Rogers Park. The restaurant and bar are hip and elegant, and the food and drinks are exciting and tasty. My fiancé and I have never had a bad experience: the staff is always helpful, the sommelier has made some excellent suggestions to complete our meals, and the flavors of the dishes are sublime.

We loved this place!

By all means, go and enjoy Viet Bistro. This is an elegant, fun and reasonably priced Vietnamese restaurant. Go for the food - our favorites from Pasteur are still available: whole red snapper and peking duck. Service is informed and attentive. The sommelier knows just the right wine for any meal, but the bar offers lots of other temptations. You'll enjoy the sleek decor.
