This chalet-style, white-tablecloth restaurant focuses on Polish classics. There are delicious pierogi, richly flavored bigos (a hearty, cabbage-based stew), trout, herring and a breaded pork cutlet with sheep cheese among the many dishes. And there also is the complimentary bread, a dense potato creation shaped like a thick pancake. Cut into triangles--not unlike pita--it is served with a tangy sheep cheese spread and a bacon and onion spread. But another attention-getter at Szalas is the fun decor: folk costumes hanging on the walls, a large water wheel, a stone fireplace and snow sleds doubling as booths.
