Windows, on the 12th floor of the DoubleTree Hotel in Skokie, offers a different buffet luncheon menu every day Monday through Friday. And then . . . there is the view. The best aspect is to the south where - barring fog or haze - one easily can see the Chicago skyline and beyond. To the west and north there are the parking lots of the neighboring stores and a car dealer. But if you look out instead of down, you may be surprised by the number of trees (still) covering the landscape. The buffet lunch menu rotates from Mexican to Italian to Asian to American to French. It's presented attractively, the hot items in big hotel-style silver warmers. Expect white linen tablecloths, linen napkins and fresh flowers on each table. The abundance of white napery is balanced by the gold-and-black striped drapery and the burgundy chairs. A huge chandelier hangs in the center of the room. The changing fixed-price menu always includes chicken, beef and fish entrees as well as soup, salad and fresh fruit. The desserts include chocolate mousse, chocolate mousse cake, miniature pastries and cheesecake with strawberry sauce. Diners prepare their own plates from the buffet. The waitstaff comes around to take cocktail orders and pour coffee. The Windows space is available at night for private parties and receptions. Arrangements are made through the hotel. The lady who needs to powder her nose will find in the restroom a small lounge area with comfortable chairs, an ample mirror and fresh flowers.
