West Town Tavern

Neighborhood: West Town
1329 W. Chicago Ave.

Chicago, IL 60622

Price range: $$ ($9-$15)
This down-to-earth neighborhood spot specializes in contemporary comfort food. The space at West Town Tavern features exposed brick walls, windows on two sides, and a mammoth mirror on one end of the room, making the space feel much larger than it is. The dark-wood bar, with retro beaded lamps and more mirrors, serves the full menu for those who want a quick bite.

The restaurant is owned by Susan and Drew Goss (Zinfandel), who have put together a straightforward menu that offers a little bit of everything. Appetizers include the beer cheese plate (with crunchy toasts), gnocchi (with asparagus, soybeans and pesto) and flatbread (herb roasted mushrooms, leeks, white truffle oil and mozzarella), served pizza-style with a light, crispy crust.

Entrees include duck (confit leg with mashed parsnips, caramelized shallots and thyme), steak (pepper-crusted prime top sirloin with zinfandel reduction and tavern fries) and a pork chop (brown sugar cured with roasted garlic mascarpone cheese grits, herbed succotash and dried cherry sage sauce). Desserts are also made in-house and include a chocolate-walnut brownie sundae and a bourbon pecan pie. The compact wine list features selections from around-the-world, available both by the glass and by the bottle.
