Tru: User Reviews
We only went for the dessert tasting menu, but it wonderful. The service seemed spot on even though we were only spending $25 a person. The room is beautiful as well. The dessert tasting was an incredible value. We got an amuse, two courses (everyone at the table got a different dessert so we got to taste different things), another amuse, then mignardises and candy. We tried the lemon panna cotta, sticky toffee pudding, cocoa nib macaroon, and chocolate box. All were very rich. The macaroon and sticky toffee were standouts for me. The amuses included a geleed cherry and root beer float. This inspired us to try the whole collection next time we visit!
Report This ReviewI had my worst dining experience at Tru. The food was bland at best. I have never been to a restaurant where I am drinking $300 bottles of wine and I have to wave the waiter down for another bottle. A good restaurant doesn't need to have salt and mustard on the table but at Tru, mustard would have been enjoyed alone, because my steak was HORRIBLE. The appetizer was tasteless. My prime rib eye tasted like it was microwaved and cold. One out of four dishes were ok, but after waiting 3 hours for your entree, a plate of salt with a side of fish, was somewhat tasty. By the way, that was the only dish that came out hot. The cheeses were good, and the chocolates were good. I am glad I got to eat something with flavor, and it's a good thing that chocolates don't need to be hot. I too, will never eat there again, even if it's free. In fact, I don't think I hate anyone enough to recommend Tru.
Report This ReviewVery disappointed with our dining experience. The food was bland, the dessert tasted stale and the room seems cold and uninviting. Definitely not worth the money. Even if the dinner was free, I would not return. Though I should mention the staff was attentive and knowledgeable.
Report This ReviewThe Tru experience is along the same lines as Trotter's and Everest. The food was savory and the service was impeccable. The staff was extremely colloquial and more than happy to answer all of my questions regarding the dishes and preparations. I expected a little more from the main dessert; however, the homemade chocolates were amazing. Don't sit by the window, the sounds of the city and hospital can be a little irksome. Great ambience (mod art). Deletable food. Amazing service. Great experience.
I've read the other reviews. I'm not a food snob by any means, but Tru is the pinnacle of fine dining in Chicago. It's like going to a museum of fine art. If salt and mustard on the table, a hunk of Velveeta and bread, substitutions to avoid hives, and more gluttony for the money are your things, then this kind of place is not for you.
Report This ReviewI've been to 4-star restaurants before and Tru exceeds them all. The service was impeccable. The food was completely amazing, with rich flavors that harmonize perfectly. My wife had a 6-course meal; I had a 9-course meal. I eat like there's no tomorrow and thought I wouldn't be full at the end, but I was surprised to be quite stuffed before dessert. Speaking of which, I was a bit disappointed with that...expecting more from the famous Ms. Gand and her staff...but still solid. It did take us 4 hours to eat, but the food and overall experience took our breaths away. Comes with a very steep price so I wouldn't come here for anything but a special occasion. However, if you do come on a special occasion, it's not just a home run but a grand slam.
Report This ReviewTo dine at a place like this you must be open to the full experience and I don't blame the chef if he would get offended when asked for substitutions. My husband and I have been here for a couple of special occasions and we have always had a great time! Everything from the tasting menus to the cheese tray to the dessert (little treat on your way out too) are amazing! You go all the way here! This place is not for picky eaters.
Report This ReviewA surprisingly poor experience. We went there for our anniversary and were very disappointed. We asked for some non-meat and non-shellfish dishes and they could not have cooperated less. Special orders DO upset them. We even took the time to write the owner about our terrible meal there, but they never responded.
Report This ReviewThe food was extremely over priced. The entree was sub par but the dessert was excellent. (Chocolate Creme Brulee)
Report This ReviewThis restaurant was everything we expected it to be, the food was an experience, the staff were wonderful and charming, and there was good conversation all over the room. I was extremely happy with my food, everything that was placed in front of me was completely enjoyed. I left stuffed and happy. It was expectedly expensive, their website clearly states prices of course selection and wine so we were cost prepared and not surprised with our bill at all. This is a restaurant I would enjoy coming to again to try some of their other course selections and desserts.
Report This ReviewA truly agonizing experience. We spent 5.5 hours waiting for 8 morsels of food. Some of us had to resort to eating the fruit decorations from the table. The service staff reminded me of stern monks who took an oath of silence. Desert came at midnight.....we almost deceided to have after dinner coffee as it would have been breakfast time already. Prices were about $500 pp, could not help wondering why they didn't have to pay us for investing so much time in their place.
