I went to The Flower Flat for take-out with the intention of taking it back to my hotel room because I normally don't like eating in restaurants alone. While I was waiting for my food, because of the ambiance of the place and the friendly staff I decided to eat it there. Betsy, the owner is very welcoming and I immedately felt at home. I had the BLT and soup, which were both out of this world.! The other dishes I saw coming out of the kitchen were beautifully plated and the other diners confirmed that they tasted as good as they looked. I will definitely go back the next time I'm in Chicago. I only wish I had a place like that in my neighborhood!

Every neighborhood has it's unique spot to call it's own.and The Flower Flat is that just that spot in Lakeview. Last summer Betsy purchased this neighborhood icon and has since created a menu of traditional cafe items with a unique gourmet spin at a great value. I have tried almost every item at least once -- never being disappointed. Of course, it's not just the food that is notable about the Flower Flat -- on your way out, there is always a super selection of fresh flowers to take home with you.... a perfect way to complete your experience. See you there -- but don't take my seat!!

I always feel welcomed here. Even when it's busy, the owner Betsy Mikelson, calls out a Hello from her kitchen. I've tried many things on the menu and have enjoyed everything. There is usually a special, breakfast & lunch, and always a great option. I think for such a tiny place they deliver plenty of fresh and tasty food. They even work with local businesses like Red Hen Bread and Intelligentsia Coffee, and I noticed they serve Bobtail ice cream. The service is great. There is one server and she really has her hands full between the busy cafe and the flower shop. This is a place to be comfortable and to not take things too seriously. There are obviously a few "regulars", and lots of lively conversation.

Cute N Kitchy

The Flower Flat is part flower shop and part tiny cafe. It's an intimate experience, as there are only 14 seats. We arrived around 11am on Saturday and sat right down, no wait, which was nice for us, although there was no direction as to where to sit, and who played what part in the cafe, it would have been nice to have been greeted and welcomed. I should add though that owner/cook came out to see if we like everything, and she was sweet and spunky. The decor is a little kitchy and all over very well put together. You can tell the owners take pride. The coffee was served in a coffee press, which is always a bonus. Fresh, homemade jelly that was delicious was also a really nice touch. I had scrambled egg whites with cheese, mushrooms, onions that was good. My potatoes were undercooked, and could have used more flavor. My english muffin was a little hard around the edges, and was not served with butter. I would have expected a better quality bread choice, like from a local bakery. This one tasted store bought. I did order a side of bacon, which the waitress forgot, but I never mentioned it, otherwise I am sure they would have brought some out. The only downside I would say is that I would have liked to see more choices on the menu, like an omelet, eggs benedict, and sausage. I would have expected with such a cute little place they would have something a little special to offer, not sure what, but just something that makes them stand out, and something that I would have to go back there just to get it. If I lived closer I would probably go back, but I'm a $10 cab ride away, and to pay that just to get there, they will have to make some additions to the menu, as well as better quality bread and well as food presentation.
