"Tallgrass Beef" Penne Pasta tossed in a basil-tomato-meat sauce with Parmesan and Breadcrumb topping A+; This dish came out steaming from their oven with a perfectly crusted breadcrumb top. Service was quick and easy, unusually at lunchtime.

Prairie Grass delivered last night!...
By ddornback from Park Ridge, IL, July 15, 2007

Prairie Grass delivered last night! We were seated right away and given options of where to sit. Our server made wonderful suggestions and provided top notch service throughout the entire meal. We tried three different appetizers. The Peeky Toe Crab cake's presentation was only outdone by the taste. The Pate and Asian Style spring rolls weren't as pretty but not a smidge of either was left. The ladies enjoyed "Nordic" Martinis and I selected a nice Sanford Pinot which was reasonable priced. Our mains were equally satisfying. The ladies went with Phyllo Strudel which may be even better than some of its predecessor incantations. The Salmon special was beautifully prepared on a bed of Lentils and vegetables. Desert was a treat, the Muck Muck and baked berry crumble made a brief appearance at the table. George, Rohit, and Sarah have done a fine job..as if there was any doubt.

Went back for seconds and loved the place. Tuna is still the highlight but the avocado salad was excellent as well as the bisque special and the breaded pork cutlets with very creamy mashed potatoes.

The room is ok and the female bartender is snooty. She seemed to be offended when we asked what type of scotch they had. But it was THE BEST ahi tuna and spinach I ever had and the prices are quite reasonable. Salads were also good and creative. The muck muck desert was good but nothing special.

My husband and I and two friends has a very enjoyable meal last night. Yes, the hard surfaces throughout the restaurant make for a rather loud atmosphere, but the food was terrific and the service was great. We appreciated the hearty portions, the reasonable prices and the interesting wine list. We ordered 4 appetizers, 4 entrees and 2 deserts with not a loser mong them. This is a quick drive from Northlight Theatre and will be a return destination for us.

We went based on what stellar reputation this place has. The biggest dissappointment to me was the room, could the lighting have been more glaring or the room more noisy? We sat in the bar next to smokers in order avoid the noise. the food all around was OK. Except, i think In the 2nd week of September, one should expect fresh tomatoes...our salad arrived with rather stiff and flavorless tomatoes.

The service was fine, the food was OK, the room is bad. Not romantic or intimate at all, I felt like I was at a convention.

I wish I could put 0 stars. I just tried Prarie Grass after not having been there in two years. It was so bad the first time I was reluctant to go back. But since it was still open, and some people have said good things, I gave it a second shot. Read all of the negative comments in this section because they are right on! I will add one more though, totally unimaginative menu. You'd think someone with Stegners reputation would add a little more zing to the menu. The one item that sounded interesting, Salmon spring rolls were such a small portion I had to get a second one to fill up! Unless you want a pile of overcooked spinach for lunch. If I'm going to eat mediocre food I'll just go next door to 41 North, at least I'll be full.
