amazing food from RUDE people
By Mockingbird from Evanston, January 2, 2009

I have been going to M. Henry for three years and the food is sublime. However, the service is always dismissive, condesecending, rushed, brusque, forgetful, hostile-- or some combination of those. We were seated by the owner himself today and he was actively rude-- even when we gushingly complimented his food. Not sure why he bothers to make face-time with customers if he finds them so contemptible. No wonder the waitstaff is so rude if this is the example the boss is setting. Still, I'd gladly be treated like dirt if in order to get my hands on some of the Blackberry Bliss Pancakes.

Great food, ridiculous wait

Had brunch (or, lunch?) at M Henry on a Sunday. I have been in the restaurant business for 15 years and was looking forward to the highly recommended brunch spot. Was quoted a 25 minute wait. We (a party of 3) waited over an hour. The two times I went to check on our name, I was told that they were 'waiting on a 4-top to get up' and that they were 'doing 800 covers today.' While I can appreciate a busy day (being that I have experienced many days in the business like this), I can assure you that the majority of the guests waiting for tables had NO idea what doing '800 covers' meant, nor did they care...
It was interesting that the hosts continued to quote people 20-25 minutes even though they were obviously running a lot longer wait. And they continued to seat their friends prior to us regular joe's. This would all have been a lot less stressful if I had been quoted an appropriate wait time, that way I could have made a quick decision to stay or go somewhere else and not have wasted half of my day waiting for brunch. Which I did.

After finally being seated, our service was great and the food came out very quickly. I had the crab-cake benedict and really enjoyed it. It was fresh and well seasoned. The place is adorable and the menu is very eclectic and interesting. I watched a few of my neighbors receive heaping plates of fruit-stuffed french toast and fluffy berry pancakes- it all looked delicious.

While I will never go back to M Henry on a Sunday, I will definitely go back any other day of the week.

Good food....bad bad bad service.....

First time to M Henry and really didnt' know what to expect. Saturday...11am....yikes! I thought we would have a huge wait....but be got right in. Although we were seated right away it took a very long time (at least 15min) for someone to come to the table. I actually had to go and ask the hostess if she could get our server. People were seated AFTER us and got served, ate, and left before we got our food.

Although the food was good and the presentation was great...the service was very very poor. Our server was less than enthusiastic and we felt like we were a bother to her. We got our food (which the server forgot a side) and then we never saw her again until we got the check...which I had to go and ask the hotess again for! Waiting to pay for a meal is one of my biggest pet peeves...especially when the meal was less than satisfying!

I would usually chalk this up to a "bad day" but given the fact that none of the staff seemed like they overly cared one of their customers had a bad experience, I will not go back.

Another great find in Andersonville!

After a below average first experience I returned for a second time on the insistance of some close friends. The food was delicious and inventive both times, and the decor is unique and fantastic! Service seems to always be a bit off. The first time we were told 45 min to an hour for Sunday brunch and we waited an hour and a half. They offered to buy us appetizers as an apology but that was one large, very sweet, dessert-like item. The waiter forgot my salad, my friend's bacon, and messed up our juice order completely. The food (that we got) was very tasty! I took two friends back for a second visit and the wait was much shorter than quoted, we had the same server who did bring our order correctly (although we had a very simple order), and the food was delicious. The eggs were perfectly poached - and that is a feat in a restaurant that turns out the volume that this cute little american breakfast bistro does. I will be going back many times!

best brunch ever!

to sum this place up: very attentive and friendly service, AMAZING food, comfortable and hip atmosphere. great cappacino too. i went for brunch yesterday, and everything on the menu looked so good, i can't wait to go back and try more of it. i would recommend going on a weekday, because the wait for a table on the weekends is usually an hour or more. worth the wait, though.

Rushed through meal and bad service

This weekend I went to M. Henry; it was my second time there. The first time I went the food was good so two of my fellow law students and I decided to go. After we were seated, we promptly ordered. We ate relatively quickly, and then began to discuss our class notes. We had only been finished eating for 5 minutes and then the owner and waitress started walking by and giving us dirty looks. The owner told us (did not ask, he told us) that we had to leave because he needed our table. We were shocked! We had only been there an hour and spent $50 on breakfast. We had waited 40 minutes to get that table. Meanwhile, two girls at the table next us had their laptops out and were working on something, but he did not approach them. Seconds after the owner asked us to leave our waitress came over and said "I will take your credit cards or cash." We said give us a second. We gave her cash and asked for change, and she acted annoyed we did not have the exact amount. We tipped her 15%, because we were disappointed with the service and being forced to leave. Then, the waitress had the audacity to ask my friend if we were disappointed with our service because of the "small" tip. We won't be going back. Why spend $50 on breakfast if we have to leave immediately after we finish our last bite?

Great brunch!

I had brunch with friends at M Henry recently, and just loved it. It was my first visit there, and my expectations were high because I had heard so many people raving about it. I wasn't disappointed---all the good reviews are well-deserved. I had the fried egg sandwich, which was outstanding (I especially liked the sourdough bread). We also tried the french toast with fruit: very good, with just the right amount of sweetness, and some really good strawberries (not easy in January!). The service was very good as well. Our waiter was freiendly and efficient, and checked on us regularly without being intrusive. I especially liked that the bus staff refilled our water glasses frequently, and offered additional hot water for the hot tea drinkers. (That's one of my pet peeves: coffee drinkers are offered refills all the time, but at most places you have to almost beg for more hot water. Not at M Henry!) I had a great experience, and will definitly go back.

good food, bad service
By edgewater dweller from edgewater, January 6, 2008

My husband and I have been to M Henry's a bunch of times, but each time we go, the service gets poorer and poorer. As a vegan it can be difficult to find entirely vegan entrees, but the vegan epiphany is excellent! Unfortunately, the poor service and bad attitudes we exeperienced from a number of different servers over our last several visits will keep us from going back. The wait to get in is terribly long, the service is poor, but the food is excellent- consider yourself warned.

Busy, sometimes strange service and amazing food
By LaurenE from Lakeview, November 10, 2007

We had the Fried Egg Sandwich and Banana Rumba French Toast - both deliciously fresh and filling at the same time! The hostess said it would be a 35 minute wait for our party of five and we were seated in 20. The atmosphere was really busy for awhile (four different people were servicing our table) and almost annoying, but it calmed down after 1:30PM. Overall awesome food - especially the sweets.

This is a great brunch...
By Kenmore/Winthrop from Edgewater, IL, September 7, 2007

This is a great brunch place I always take out-of-town guests. The food is fresh and fantastic, but don't leave your house hungry. On a weekend morning, you will almost definitely not be seated for at least 30 minutes, if not longer. I will say, however, that it's well worth the wait.
