Kitsch'n River North: User Reviews
Kitsch'n River North

I avoid this place during weekday lunches not because of the restaurnt itself but because of the people that work in the building who believe that their time is so much more important then anyone elses. Please people I am busy too. I actually overheard a man and women give this poor server an order that was so high maintenence " No this add this, easy this, Crispy that" that it took 5 minutes just to order. Then had the balls to say " we are in a hurry"
Sorry I strayed from the purpose... Brunch is awesome! Service great and cheap drinks. They let our dog on the patio as well. Great job Kitschn!

Once again, this place never grasps the meaning of "customer" It seems as though the servers couldn't care less if you ever came back. It's not that there's not enough of them, it's just the wrong people doing the job. More annoying is their attitudes. There are plenty of places in Chicago that will let you know how much they appreciate your business. This isn't one of them.

We love the Kitsch'n in Roscoe Village and have been going there for years. Saturday was my first visit to their River North spot and it was great. We were seated quickly and our server did a good job of recommending things as they have an expanded menu at this location. We ordered our favorites just to see if they were as good as the original and they were dead on - beautifully plated and tasty. The space was bright and colorful, the cafe packed, and it had a great ambiance despite being much bigger than their original. Definitely our new fave in River North for brunch!

I go to this place because its in the building where i work. The prices arent that bad and the food is ok if you like bland... you will need sides/condiments to make it really good. They have a side cafe that is pretty alright but the actual restaurant i will never go back inside. The waiters are too scatter brained and do not privide the service I would expect. I will stick to the grab and go and my turkey avacado wrap!

Every day Kitsch'n is packed for lunch. Why? Because it's the only lunch spot in the area, and the many professionals working nearby have no where else to go. It's over-priced, the food is unimaginative and just bad, and the wait staff is rude. I ate there today (much to my dismay - I didn't want to go), but had no other choice. After waiting 15 minutes for service, I finally tracked down a waiter who looked very inconvenienced to serve me and my friend (so sorry to bother you at your restaurant, Mr. Waiter). He brought us our check before he brought our food (you've got to be kidding). My friend's hamburger was clearly warmed in the microwave. I ordered an omelette with side salad. The omelette was reasonable I suppose, but they forgot the salad. Lucky me, they did remember the dressing. Maybe they thought it would make a good dip for my omelette. I didn't even bother asking them to fix it. Ugh. PLEASE, someone open a new lunch joint in River North. There is pent up demand bursting at Kitschn's seams.

What a horrible experience. My husband and I went for breakfast, I ordered an omlet and hasbrowns. The omlet was oily and rubbery and the hasbrowns were chunks of overcooked dried out potatoes. The best thing about my meal was the grapefruit juice. My husband had the bagle and locks, which were ok. If you go, just make sure and stick to items on the menu that don't require cooking.

The only thing I like about Kitsch'n is that they have a great kids menu. It actually is a restaurant where you can order a vegetable, fruit and meat item for your child. The children's menu covers all the standard kid foods and more. However, the service is slow and it takes a long time for the food to get to the table after you order it. The food choices for adults are not that healthy and include a lot of fried items. The atmosphere is fun-retro. The menu doesn't have anything clever on it, just your basic items. I only go here when I want to eat out with my child.

I'm a good sport. And patient. So I've tried this place four different times now. Busy times. Slow times. Morning times. Night times. And my experiences have been consistently horrible. The service is abysmal. The food inedible. Why would you subject yourself to this kind of experience--and pay good money for the privilege--when there are so many halfway decent restaurants in Chicago?

They must be fixing things becuz I had none of the problems noted in the earlier reviews either. service was quick & friendly, brunch-type food and cappucino was better than I could make at home. I live in the neighborhood too and would definitely try it again.
Report This ReviewFirst off, I'm not sure if they have fixed the service problems other people were complaining about, or I happened to hit the restaurant at a good time (saturday around 1pm), but I had no problems with our waitress/food. While not anything to write home about, the service was perfectly serviceable.
I went with a friend a Saturday or two ago...I had the chilequiles, which were interesting, although perhaps heavy on the torillas. Friend ordered the green eggs, which were quite good, although I honestly would say I prefer Orange's. The home fries and Texas toast were great. I will be heading back to try a few other things.
Finally, the decor is pretty amazing...well done!
