Chic catering and private party venue Corner Cooks recently expanded next door to open Jerry's, a contemporary American spot for lunch and dinner. Like its neighbor, Jerry's boasts a granite-topped bar and tables and an open kitchen, and shares chef Larry Smith. The daytime menu is tailored for the ladies-who-lunch crowd, with affordable light bites such as mini crabcakes with wasabi cream, beet salad and soup served with dunking bread. Full-size salads and sandwiches are a bit pricier, with the Asian salad with warm shredded chicken, dates, wonton crisps and peanut-lime dressing earning the rank of most popular.
The dinner concept emphasizes whimsical, sharable options, with entrees that are larger than small plates but smaller than oversized entrees. "It's fun to taste lots of different stuff," says owner Betsy Simson of her vision opening the spot, named after her dad Jerry. "It's not fun to get one heavy thing and be stuck eating it all." By that token, popular starters include a shrimp lollipop with sweet chili sauce and salmon-avocado sashimi in wonton cups and a daily risotto "bomb." Other savory dishes include butternut squash ravioli with rosemary-butter sauce, grilled veggies with red pepper sauce and a beef daube (a Provencal-style soup flavored with olives and citrus zest) that regulars are lapping up. The "sweet plates by the taste," (a.k.a. mini desserts available at lunch and dinner) are brilliant at just a couple bucks a piece, ranging from an apple sachet with caramel sauce to a spoonful of creme brulee to strawberries with bittersweet chocolate fondue.
