Cafe Absinthe: User Reviews
Just ate here late night for wedding anniversary. Great food and service. Have already recommended and would definitely return. Love the open kitchen concept. We were impressed with all our courses. Just fabulous. Restaurant a little too dark, but NOT noisy.

Five of us had a great dinner last night. The waiter was a little slow in taking drink orders, but that was the low point of the evening. Among the items we ordered were a small cheese plate (ok) and grilled octopus (excellent) appetizers. I tasted most entrees which were all great: ostrich (great), duck breast (great), scallops (fantastic, but watch out for that sauce. It's delicious but nearly 100 percent butter!), beef tenderloin (very nice). The bread was fresh with a nice texture, and there was an interesting wine list. Service allowed for a lingering meal where the service was not rushed. That could be because we had a later reservation. Everyone felt it was an excellent meal. One of the more memorable meals I've had in Chicago.

We were just there for my burthday. I don't know what all the complaining is about. The staff was curteous, friendly and knowlegable. The food was great. We had the creamy cauliflower and mussel soup. Great presentation and tasty. The lamb chops I had were perfect and my wife's scallop dish was to die for. I would go back again in a heartbeat. Fine dining. Nice decor. What is there not to like?

Popped in on a Sat. night, told we had to wait, even though there were open tables that were never occupied entire meal. Ordered drinks from the bartender who was not only snotty, but also seemed to know very little about alcohol. Once seated, waitress was neglectful, never asked how food was, or if we needed anything. When we did, we had to ask 3-4 times for her to remember. Long wait for food. Risotto way too rich, and over-seasoned. Took forever to get check. Won't be back, has gone way downhill.

We were really excited about going to Cafe Absinthe for New Years Eve. We made the reservation a few weeks ago and received a confirmation and everything. Tonight (12/29) at 9:30, they called to tell us that they had a glitch with their online reservation system. They were now having a prix fixe menu and it was going to be $95 per person to dine there on NYE. Now we're left scrambling to find another plan for dinner that night. I hope others haven't had this same experience there just so the restaurant can rack up a $400 tab for someone else's table of 4!!

Ive been going to Cafe Absinthe for some time, with all the new places in the neighborhood its been a year or more since Ive been. WHAT HAPPENED?!! It was always the most stylish and atmospheric in the neighborhood. Victor, our beloved Clarence and Marshall are all gone. Replaced by surly waitstaff, uninspiring food and a neglected wine list. Not at all the place it use to be. Very disappointing!

Tucked behind the recently-trendy North-Damon-Milwaukee area is this wonderful restaurant. Great for both romantic dates or a group of friends, I would highly recommend this place. Food is excellent and the presentation higher end than the prices reflect. Scallop dish was amazing with lobster cream sause, and the apps are super tasty. Real foi gras (not the spread), crab cakes and cheese plate all great starters.

I have lived in Bucktown/Wicker Park for the past three years and have just now gone to Cafe Absinthe. I had the butternut squash soup and the scallops and my bf had the lobster spinach salad and the beef tenderloin. All of our dishes were wonderful and very filling. We ended our evening with the chocolate cake and the creme brulee trio which was a perfect end to our special evening. My only complaint is that there was not a more varied price list of wines. Otherwise both the service and the food met my expectations and I would recommend Absinthe for a special evening out.

We had an excellent experience during our Saturday night dinner at Cafe Absinthe! Everything from the warm and inviting atmosphere, to the delicious food, to the music, to the service was outstanding! A truly great night out.
